Does anyone know how much gas needs to be put in the aircon system of a 2000 306 HDi? I've had conflicting reports of anything between 700 and 1000 grams.

If it was an R-12 system and the amount was shown on the plate, you can work on that less 10% when converted to R134a.
On BXs they took 1KG or 1000grms, as a result the charge was around the 800/900 range.
Most systems are around that figure and it's easy to see if it's overcharged as the frost line starts to creep down the return line towards the compressor on a coolish day.
They usually don't have to be deadly accurate as the TX valve tends to be a thing that helps keep things in perspective as it cuts the flow of gas when the coil is cool, so if it were me, I'd suggest they put 800 in and see what happens. That I reckon would be close enough.
