Bleeding fuel filter!

Bleeding fuel filter!
Tried to drain water from the fuel filter on 1.9td Xantia using the drain screw supplied, but nothing came out. Do you have to use the rubber priming bulb to "pump" fuel out? Any ideas?
I always slacken off the bleed screw at the bottom of the filter housing, then pump the primer a couple of times, the housing then starts to drain. Once you have removed the filter top cover, any diesel/water held in the housing will drain away
If rubber pipe is missing from bleed screw, be careful to ensure that the diesel does not drain through the bellhousing onto the clutch!
