Does this apply to images that are in folders set to private as well?
If you mean private folders on your Photobucket account then No - Only images that have been publicly shared and embedded within Forum posts as I understand it James.
My embedded images were from Private albums mostly.
I have just set them to public so as to not hamper the work you are doing.
I won't touch photo bucket again until your work is completed then I'll just download any pictures I don't have copies of, which I think is none but I'd better check.

I have now enabled a software extension that redirects requests for in-line photobucket images so that they are fetched from a backup copy on this site.

You should not see the dreaded photobucket upgrade image in any normal posts.

If you do spot a rogue upgrade image, please let me know, as the script may have missed some encoding formats.

A very nice job with the script there indeed. Well done.

I've seen at least one avatar that still shows the demoralising PB 'dial of death' - Wurlycorner's. At least I assume his avatar image is supplied by PB, and he hasn't actually used the 'dial of death' as an avatar :rofl2: I can't imagine many users have their avatar hosted by PB though !

Well spotted, there are a few avatars that are still playing up. I have also noticed that some recently added posts may have problems. I will iron these out if practical.

[edit] I have now fixed the bug that affected photobucket images in recently added posts.
I have decided not to fix photobucket avatars. The affected users can re-host their avatar here or elsewhere. [/edit]

I think you ought to stipulate that actually using the PB 'Dial of Death' as an avatar is strictly forbidden :rofl2:

Many many thanks for your - and the other Admins - efforts in getting all the PB images back up onto the forum and saving the rest of us the tiresome job of doing it manually. Hats off to you. :)

All down to Mike's efforts, which I'm sure we all appreciate in saving us a lot of editing.

I'm leaving my Photobucket accounts until the end of the week, which by then I will have completed downloading all the images I require. I shall then take great pleasure in sending both my accounts to the great big recycle bin in the sky.

I should clarify a couple of things:
  • Where a post contains a simple in-line image hosted at photobucket, we have downloaded the image, and it will now be served by our server, regardless of whether it is deleted from photobucket or your account closed. You can of course edit your post here to stop display of the image if you wish.
Here is an example of such an image:
    Image
  • Where a post contains a link to a photobucket image not using [ IMG][ /IMG] tags (so not an in-line image), the image file will not have been backed up by us and the link will cease to function if the image is deleted from photobucket or your account closed.
This is an example of such a link:
    http://s989.photobucket.com/user/GiveMe ... s.png.html
    or
    http://s989.photobucket.com/user/GiveMe ... s.png.html
  • The standard photobucket [ IMG][ /IMG] string which most of you pasted into your posts contains 2 links, a link for the in-line image, and a click-through link which takes you to the photobucket web site. I have only patched the in-line links, so the click-through links still go to photobucket. If you delete your files form photobucket or close your account, the images will still appear as normal on this forum, but the clickable link will go to a 404-not-found page. I don't see this as a serious problem, as long as you understand the behaviour.
This is an example of such a clickable link:
    Image
  • The scripts which grab our backup files for this feature are run manually, and I may or may not run them in the future, so I would advise against adding new photobucket linked images to this forum, as they may not be picked up for backup.

Clicking on the links and the lower thumbnail give me the 'Dial' image, along with pop-ups. Was that intended?

It is the expected behaviour. We only serve the local copies of the images for in-line display. any link (explicit or click-through) will still go to the original location on photobucket.

Note that the "thumbnail" examples above are not actually thumbnails in the normal sense, they are just small images.

Could you not redirect this second link to the image itself so that we could see a full sized picture if needed?

The image that is displayed is the full size image, scaled by your browser, if necessary, to fit on the screen.

Try it with one of your own images.

These re-hosted in-line images are hosted differently than uploaded attachments. Attached images are thumbnailed by the forum and clicking on them takes you to the full sized image. With the ex-photobucket images, the forum only ever serves up the full size image (which may previously have been scaled by photobucket).
