Sat Nav or lack of it (RT6)
Hi Guy's
Well I am going into Nottingham to night and thought I would use the built in satnav to take me where I want to go. No such luck. I have tried to put the post code in but it is having none of it, so I got some blue tack and stuck my old faithful garmin satnav to the dash ( look's a pig's ear )and that found me a route in seconds.
What I would like to know is, Can the myway satnav in my 2011 c5 x7 be upgraded or updated to take post codes.
I seem to remember a guy on here giving us a lead to a program that converts post code to map coordinates

A satnav that doesn't accept postcodes?
What the hell are they thinking...

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
It should take postcodes, but only the first 5 digits - then you generally select the house number / street from the returned results. There was a firmware upgrade that allowed 7 digit mapping on SOME systems (not the NG4 Navidrive 3D for sure), but required both a new map update and the newer firmware. I'll have to check which ones these were...renagade wrote:Hi Guy's

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
OK, so if you give a long press down on the SETUP button, it will display the unit info and firmware. Can you take a screen shot for me so I can verify the firmware you have and what you need. I suspect you have an earlier version of firmware and will likely need 2.80, but I'll await your picture....
Whilst you are at it, can you also take a snap of the front of your head unit so I can visually cross reference the unit design.

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
As a general comment, some Sat Navs will accept a full 7-character post code, but actually drop the last digit; this is a real problem in any area with two digits after the Post City (e.g. GL11) where 6 characters only gets down to the level of post round, which in our case includes a small maze of narrow 1930s terraces off the main main A road. My son's expensive, 3 year-old, Truckman GPS will direct a car transporter, not to the local garage on the main road, but into the middle of the maze where it would get stuck (nowhere to turn round)!="GiveMeABreak"It should take postcodes, but only the first 5 digits - then you generally select the house number / street from the returned results. There was a firmware upgrade that allowed 7 digit mapping on SOME systems (not the NG4 Navidrive 3D for sure), but required both a new map update and the newer firmware. This problem hasn't been replicated on TomTom or Garmin sat navs, not even very early ones, at a fraction of the price.
Given that most (all?) car manufacturers charge more for a GPS upgrade of any sort (maps and/or firmware) than a decent new stand-alone GPS, I wouldn't actually want a built-in GPS.

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
General comments regarding aftermarket GPS systems accepted Guy.
For those of us with built in systems however, it is about trying to get the best out of what we already have. My system was near on a couple of £ grand option. Sure, I've posted about the NG4 system and the lack of 7 digit post code input on the Forum and followed this through with Citroen head office. I have had to resign myself to 5 digit mapping and selection from the results as posted earlier and I can live with this as there will not be any further firmware updates for this system most probably.
The OP's issue is with his RNEG and I know that the firmware update fixed this issue and will allow full post code searching, I have the free firmware update available for his system once he confirms the version info.
It has to be a matter of personal preference though. I for one would rather keep all the other features afforded by my NG4 system and have 5 digit mapping, than have an aftermarket GPS stuck on my dash and all the tatty wiring that goes with it. It probably has something to do with my OCD though! Regardless though, I have just bought the latest mapping DVD (2016-2) and they still haven't added a roundabout that has been there for over 2 years!

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
No need to read the manual - it is just crap from the outset.
The one my daughter had would take her to the previous owner's villa in Spain (the only place it ever went) and nowhere else.

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
Several people at work have had the same experience.
My eldest son with Mercedes too.
Said the best was in a Ford Focus he drove in America, my brother agrees, he has a Mondeo and says it is ever so polite and accurate.

That hit the nail on the head - inbuilt satnavs need women's intuition uploading to them.

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
What I find depressing is that so many car manufacturers fit crap Sat Navs and charge a fortune for them, instead of doing a deal with TomTom and designing fascias that offer a choice of a built-in unit that's at least as good in every respect as a sub-£200 after-market unit (despite my previous comments I share Marc's dislike of straggling wires), or a blank panel (to which an after-market unit can be suckered) with an adjacent power outlet. When the original unit fails or is no longer supported, the defunct sat nav screen becomes a mounting panel!
I've commented before on Garmin's use of road names (fat lot of use if there are no signs) rather than road numbers for classified roads and the consequent hilarious results if you take an English-speaking Garmin to France. This makes TomTom my sat nav brand of choice; not perfect but closest to it of the brands I've tried: Garmin, TomTom, Mio, Snooper (TruckMate, Ventura), and the TomTom was the oldest by far.

Re: Sat Nav or lack of it
I've got the TomTom Android app on my phone, £7.99 a year and it works very well. My wife's still got her TomTom one that we bought back in 2008, I update it occasionally and it's perfect for the job. It's quite an improvement on some of the later bespoke systems I've had the displeasure to use.
