Hi Claire and welcome to the Forum.

It is do-able... just a few things to be aware of - the Head Unit is often more than just a radio, it also acts as the interface to activate and deactivate some customer options and preferences on the vehicle, depending on the system you have installed and the model of the C5 you own. You will need to ensure that you have the correct audio harness that will interface between the Citroen's Steering Wheel controls and your new replacement Audio system. I would also suggest that if going ahead, you keep the old unit safe so you can restore it to the vehicle if you later sell it on as the radio is coded to your vehicle and some buyers prefer to have the original unit in the car. So if you are going ahead and replace it, be aware that you may not be able to access some of the vehicle configuration parameters.

Post up your VIN number and I can see what sort of unit you have installed in the car at the moment (you can get your VIN number from the lower area of the outside of the passenger windscreen - it is displayed in the small window).

Suggestion earlier in the thread is that a lot of stuff is routed through the unit on facelift mk1 c5's, so you do actually lose a lot of the basic car functionality, not just radio info on the main display unit (as with the pre facelift c5s like mine, where you can upgrade the headunit without losing anything)?

I don't think Claire has posted an image anywhere yet Iain - that image from the last page was from another member... I'm waiting for Claire's VIN to determine her system, as she's only just joined.

There was no link at the time I replied Iain, the post has since been edited, so hence the confusion!

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't realise it wouldn't just insert an image, and you had to link it from a site. Apologies

No problems Claire - your VIN number would still help though whenever you get the chance, as there can be several types of these units and they all look similar.

Ok, definitely the RD4 system in your car - a base unit Claire. Have you considered an interface like this to provide a USB port, Aux In Port, SD card etc., to provide iPod connectivity / MP3 playback etc?
This one will work with the RD4 and leave your head unit intact. You can also get some that are bluetooth enabled for music streaming. There are quite a few different types out there.

I've emailed you your specs for future reference too.

clairemorris wrote:Hi All

I was wondering if you could help me please, as searching through the internet isn't really giving me any answers. I have just a 56 reg Citroen C5 and the radio is a bit rubbish, so I was hoping to replace it with my DAB/Bluetooth radio from my old car, but the radio in my new 56 reg seems to be an intergrated system with non-radio functions on the panel.

Is it possible to replace, if so where can I find the details on how to do this?

The stereo in my car looks like this one:-

If it is just radio reception that is poor it could be water ingress into the aerial base, a common problem, that could have damaged the booster amp that lives there.

Thanks for the advice all, looks like I will have to get an interface unit, so I can get a USB port, Aux In Port, SD card etc, and also a 12v DAB digital radio adapter so I can have DAB radio again. I think this stereo unit in the C5 (56reg) is a very bad design flaw by Citroen.

Thanks again all

It was a decent radio for its time.

As regards replaceability, all car manufacturers have radios which are integrated into the car and are near impossible to replace. A design flaw? No. By design, yes.

There were a few optional systems available on the C5 Claire, but this model is the base design, and if you think about it, the car is 10 years old now, plus the units would of been designed a few years prior to that.

It can have an optional CD changer added, but not much else on this model I'm afraid.

I replaced my C5 radio with a relatively basic Pioneer, about £50 on ebay and it sounded brilliant, but of course you loose the extra display and remote controls.

Remote controls can be retained with a convertor module - I did this with my C5.
