In principle that is a fine idea, thanks for volunteering!Stickyfinger wrote:May I suggest a contact is made and permissions asked to translate this page and its guides ?

We need to be careful with copyright of any material, we have chosen to publish the wiki with a Creative Commons non-commercial copyright, so any material we copy must be already under a similar or looser copyright. The site in question would seem to be OK in this regard, but I am not sure that they have obtained copyright of all of their pictures.

Quite experienced with the whole thing about copyright, also I am VERY firm with using other peoples material....or them using oursxantia_v6 wrote:We need to be careful with copyright of any material, we have chosen to publish the wiki with a Creative Commons non-commercial copyright, so any material we copy must be already under a similar or looser copyright. Let me drop the page a line (unless someone already knows them/can speak French, lives there )..............
(got ya !)..........and I will be happy to work thru each guide bit by bit over time. (This project only however pls)xantia_v6 wrote:In principle that is a fine idea, thanks for volunteering!

Re: The French Car Wiki preview
Some 9 years ago, when we bought the 'Green Lady' as the second Xantia in the family, I started documenting jobs that I did on one car for future reference when I did the same job again. As I made great use of the forum it seemed only fair to contribute by offering advice and making my own guides, in PDF form, available on my own website. I freely admit to 'borrowing' pictures and instructions from this forum, and on occasion copied drawings from service.citroen, which might be problematic. Logically Citroen ought to welcome the use of their data for obsolete cars which includes part numbers that will generate spares sales, but most large corporations jealously protect their rights. For reasons that I won't go into, I had to close down my site and this material has been looking for a new home; The French Car Wiki would seem to be the ideal place.
Each source document for my PDF guides is an Open Document Text (.odt) file which can be exported equally easily as PDF or HTML. Would it be more sensible to pass them over as as ODT files for peer review? Even MSO can now handle Open Document files.
I'll compile a list of my guides and add it to this post.

Re: The French Car Wiki preview
Thanks for the offer. The wiki software generally only accepts plain text and standard image formats. If you email me an example document (odt format), I can think about how to handle it.

Re: The French Car Wiki preview
But, question...
Why do we have to register for it separately? Why can it not operate within the existing forum?

The wiki and forum have different user authentication mechanisms Iain..
We will be looking into seeing if a single sign-on can be effected..

I would happily convert my own guides (for a start) if I had the necessary permissions.

Follow the guide at: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/wiki/in ... gistration" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and let us know if you need any more information.
We know that the current registration procedure is a little convoluted, but for technical reasons, it is the best we can do at present.

Indeed, the wiki database is now backed up every morning along with the forum databases.xantia_v6 wrote:any content added from now will be preserved.
Photos, I believe, are stored in the database once uploaded so they will be there for good. Only linked photos may be at risk of disappearing so always upload them to the wiki before using them in an article..

Re: The French Car Wiki general discussion
I have just updated the wiki software with a minor security update. This update has fixed the issue with intial random passwords not working.
I have also installed the Mediawiki VisualEditor. This allows What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editing of most content. It generally makes it much easier to edit and add content to the wiki.
Existing wiki users will notice that there is an extra 'Edit source' link everywhere that there is an 'Edit' link. The 'Edit' link now takes you to the VisualEditor and the 'Edit source' link takes you to the old wikitext editor which is unchanged.
You may notice that the VisualEditor takes quite a while to initially load (maybe 20 seconds), it is not broken, and it will tell you if it times out. It is much quicker to load for subsequent edits.
If you want to try out the new editor, or contribute anything to the wiki, send me a PM with your preferred email address, and I will add an account for you.
