And we're back but...

Post by CitroJim »

Hi all,

We're back on-line but running on a contingency server restored using Friday backups so some stuff might be lost.

The normal production server has failed and as Xac is away for a week on holiday and could not resolve the problem remotely we took the decision to bring up the contingency which normally hosts the test forum.

It may not be as fast as it's running from my house and my Internet is not that fast. It's running on Apache under Linux on a not very powerful server rather than a beefy Windows Server as it normally does.

We'll advise later when normal service will be restored but it won't be until next week at least...

FWIW, Jim, the Forum is currently considerably faster for me than it has been of late!
Had the main server been slowing over the past few weeks for some reason?

Ohh, that's interesting about the speed.... My Internet is quite slow too...

And the server is only an old HP desktop....

Must be the Linux doing it... :P

BX Club is now back with us too...

Yes, here in the land that time forgot, in rural Ireland, speed is much improved too.
Maybe I've been bombarding my ISP unfairly, over the slow internet speeds.
This is great, right now...

Can confirm that the Forum server has been slow of late, compared with almost any other site. Was having problems with my broadband - kept blaming BT Openreach - turned out to be yet another failing AC (switched mode) adaptor. I've had a number (mine and various customers') fail in the last 2-3 years. Mostly just died, but a couple (one Linksys and now a Belkin) that went 'soft' - when the router started working hard for its living, the AC adaptor couldn't supply the current, with the result that the connection would drop out. Did the usual test of connecting a completely different set-up of new or known-good units directly to the Master Socket - fine, a blasting 16Mbps. Started eliminating links in the chain one by one, when I got to the original router (and its AC adaptor), the router's boot sequence halted with all the front LEDs flashing in sequence. Fortunately the AC adaptor for the spare router was compatible - problem solved.

Of course Linux is sooo much faster (and reliable) than Windoze.

I've reached my monthly download limit and am now having my speed throttled back but this page loaded quite quickly compared to others.

Excellent news on the speed folks :-D

Some of you may have experienced problem logging in whereby you were told you’d exceeded your login attempts and you found you needed to solve a CAPTCHA to log in.

This problem is now foxed...

It was caused by the fact that the forum server proper sits behind a proxy.

The speed issue were issues with the main server's internet connection, for some reason despite the router reporting decent connection speeds the actual bandwidth available was dropping rather low.
