ABS WARNING LIGHT STAYS ON XANTIA

Post by Trevor C B »

The ABS warning is staying on all of the time on my 95 2.0i 8V Xantia. Before I pull off all of the wheels to check the sensors or look at replacing the ECU can any one offer suggestions of how I should approach this problem, I understand this may be a common fault

Trevor,
This may be some helpo. It's for a BX but according to David he really knows his stuff. Should be a good starting point.

Most likely to be a failed wheel sensor. Finding their connectors, un-plugging them and connecting a test meter is a swine. Therefore check at the multi-pin plug end. The pin numbers on my Xania (ATE ECU) is
F.N.S. 15 & 30
F.O.S. 1 & 6
R.N.S. 28 & 19
R.O.S. 29 & 31
Should be about 1,500 ohms.
All the best.

Alans/ David
Checking the numbers quoted at the multiplug showed an open circuit on front nearside sensor. After checking the wiring it was found to be the sensor at fault. A replcement was bought from GSF Birmingham and fitted( Thanks for the excellent service at Birmingham store). ABS system now working. Thanks for you assistance. It made the repair so much easier

I have a 1993 Xantia VSXi and also have the problem of a permanently lit ABS warning light. The link to the bx site gave useful testing procedures for the ecu but the pin numbers do not correspond to those on my own.
The pin numbers provided by David <i></i>do<i></i> correspond and I have determined that my wheel sensors are ok. Do you (David) or anybody else know the rest of the pin assignments for the ATE ABS unit, so that I can test the rest of the connections (supply lines, earths etc) before spending my life savings on a replacement!.
Thanks
Malcolm Roach.

hey.what does the (F.O.S) stand for? well i know that the (F) stands for the front of the car and the (S) for side, but what about the (O)? what side of the car is that? right or left? please can anyone tell me?....found out that i had to replace two abs sensors, therefore it would be of very great help to know witch side the (O) stands for :-)

how about o for offside and n for nearside?providing of course that you drive on the left.if that is confusing ,sit in the car facing the front.driving on the left, the nearside will be on your left and the offside will be on your right.

I was wondering about if it´s normal that 2 abs sensors go down at the same time, and even on the same side of the car? what are the odds against this? because i don´t hope that my abs computer are broke :( ,have any of you guys in the forum had the same problem,i mean with 2 broken abs sensors at the same side of the car? ,and if you had,was it another thing than the abs sensors who provoke this failure?

Light on permanantly means that the ABS function is inactive.

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem on my 1.9 sxtd xantia(1994). I looked on this forum for the answer and found it. It is a very common fault in the xantia's of a certain age. To rectify it i had to purchase a reconned ecu from http://www.bba-reman.com/index.htm these people are very good. You have to order one from them at full price, and they will send you it by post, swap it over, if ok thats it,JOB DONE. If it doesn't rectify the fault, you can send it back and they will only charge you for a three day hire £40 approx, and send your old one back to you. Simple.
As i drive around and see xantias with these orange lights on,i think if only they looked at this forum.
Hope this helps you out.

Cheers for that. Being a bit of a novice, is the ecu easy to locate on the car and whats it like to fit?

The ECU is behind the battery, easy enough to get at. The pin numbers given by David Goddard earlier in this thread refers to the multipin plug on the top of it. If you have a multimeter it is the easist way to check the sensors. Another option is http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk, they offer a repair service on your own ECU and give a 2 year warranty. Got mine done there, never looked back since.
