C5 2.0 16v Automatic (2002 mk 1 petrol)

Post by blackbeard »

Hello to all.

I stumbled upon this site after trawling the interweb for some answers to a problem I’m having with my 2002 2.0 petrol C5 automatic. From skim reading some of the posts on this site you guys seem to have your heads screwed on and talk sense – unlike some of the other sites I dropped in on.

Anyway, I therefore decided to join the forum in order to pick a few brains. I apologise that my motives for joining are not pure – ie, I’m looking for some advice/help rather than joining to give it (although that said, if anyone has a petrol or automatic mark 1 C5 and is interested in hearing how I’ve overcome other issues that have cropped up in 3 years of ownership then I’d be pleased to help).

Basically, I need some advice on how to clear that (seemingly compulsory for all C5 owners) 'anti-pollution fault' warning on the LCD, along the potentially MOT failing illuminated 'ECU' and 'service' warning lights on the fascia that go with it.
There is nothing wrong with the car at all - so I don’t need or want to take it anywhere near a professional garage, especially that charges more per hour than I earn in a week, I just simply need to get the lights extinguished.

How do I know there is nothing wrong and how did it happen? – well, the car has a squeak from one or both of the rear brakes, so I decided to briefly ‘drag’ the brakes (ie drive the car with left foot on brakes whilst keeping right foot on accelerator) with the windows down to listen if both sides or just one were squeeling. What a mistake! My word, anyone would have thought I had pressed the self destruct button - brake-failure warning! Stop! Service, Engine management fault, and almost every other warning light came on and every bing and bong went off. Surprisingly it didn’t go into limp mode too.

Anyway, to cut a long story short (and leaving out several battery disconects and reconnects, fuses in and out, re initialisations, and 4000rpm+ thrashes later) all the lights apart from the ECU and service light have reset themselves. All the lcd warnings apart from the antipolution-fault have also vanished.

After being laid off before Christmas there is no way on earth the car is going anywhere near a dealership – therefore if there is any member who can suggest something I’ve missed, or knows someone in the Preston/Chorley/Wigan area of the North West with a Lexia (who does not charge more than my entire net worth for a diagnostic), I would greatly appreciate them getting in touch.
Cheers.

Thanks Citronut, and yes the interior was lit up brighter than B&Qs christmas sale section (with added 'bings' and 'bongs' for effect)!

Thanks Trainman, just picked up your PM and will be in touch asap.

Well, Stan came over and the lexia was duly plugged in and off we went............er no :!: at this point the Lexia decides it wants to connect to the internet to activate the programme. I know  I think to myself, I'll take it off the C5 put it on the C6 because I know it works on there........ er no :!: again :!: :!: still wants to connect to the internet....

Off stan goes with me apologising for wasting his time, whilst muttering under my breath, about the parentage of computers......

I connect the laptop up to the internet and all is fine once again, except that now the laptop keeps freezing, so it looks like I'm going to have to completely remaster it, thankfully I have the factory disc's so I know what I'm going to be doing on Saturday........

Stan, I will be in touch and we will get it sorted, once I get the laptop sorted.............(wanders off muttering)..........

Steve, I was very grateful to you for trying - therefore absolutely no need to apologise for anything at all, these things happen. It was worth the drive over to check out that twin-turbo C6 of yours anyway.

Incidently, this morning I thought I would have one final attempt at reseting the ECU by unhooking the battery, shorting the terminals, leaving everything disconnected for a couple of hours, rehooking the battery, ignition on for 5 mins before restarting, and then letting the engine idle for 10 mins. No joy. ECU and service lights still on, and antipolution fault on the LCD. Oh the joys of modern technology. When it works it works so well that it can be taken for granted, but when it fails..........
