Prolonged outage and a couple of wobbly moments just now

Post by Xaccers »

Appologies for the prolonged outage, I noticed on Friday night that the forum server was not behaving itself, and in an attempt to reboot it remotely, I inadvertantly hit the shutdown button rather than the little up arrow next to it to get to the reboot button.
Once up on my return this afternoon, the server kept rebooting after I logged in, so having to still take my inlaws back to Luton, I left it to look at when I finally got home for the night.
It looks like I've managed to resolve the underlying issue and the server is stable (touch wood).

Excellent stuff Andy :-D

Bloody servers    They're like spoilt kids...

I know how easy it is to go for a shutdown rather than a reboot - done it so many times myself

My old MD said that he would trust Eva, the cleaner, with his life.
My department manager's response was "Ah! but would you trust her with your money"?

It's only a 3½ hour drive Jim :)

Hitting shutdown in error can cause some spectacular problems. The biggest that springs to mind is when Russia sent a probe satellite to Mars. During the voyage there it usually was in standby (to save power), only being woken remotely to check everything was proceeding properly. Unfortunately on one such check, the technician, on completing the routines, sent the "Shutdown" command instead of the "Standby" command, and the probe turned itself off.

There was an issue with PC Anywhere which meant if you sent a workstation lock command and closes the remote session before the lock screen appeared, it would shut down the server.

Indeed! Thankfully we had remote control of the power sockets so could still bring it back online, but having to apologise to the client wasn't pleasant

I know what that is like. I was replacing the secondary server at a client, and I didn't notice the power lead from a UPS was loose. Halfway through the swap the whole cabinet failed, and the store had to close their doors. I was not popular. It took me 10 minutes to find the problem, as it had not come out fully.

When I worked for NTL, they got IBM in to support their internal servers (I looked after their internet facing servers and the intranet).
The intranet servers were in a rack one side of the datacenter, which IBM were responsible for so we had to move the servers over to our rack.
I was working with a young contractor called Kevin, and moving the servers (DL380 G1's) by balancing them on our heads (very health and safety concious).
I heard this loud crash and went running thinking Kevin had fallen and would be squashed under a server, and he did the same thinking the same about me.
So we stood there in the middle of the DC wondering if we were both OK, where did the crash come from, then we spotted the IBM engineer gingerly putting back one of their servers that he'd pulled out too far!

Talking of Kevin, the first time I took him to the DC I left him reading the information on the side of the backup tape silo (there was an A4 sheet giving the stats as to how many terabytes it could backup in an hour so something like that).
Then I heard this really girly scream so came running to find Kevin shaking with laughter.
He was looking through one of the inspection windows into the pitch black interior of the silo, when the robotic arm with it's two rows of red LEDs swung up at him :D
He said it was like a big red eyed monster coming at him!
