CCC Northern - Anson Engine Museum and Garden Centre

Post by Trainman »

‎16th September – Anson Engine Museum and Garden Centre, Stockport

This unusual and fascinating museum used to be one of the best kept secrets among Cheshire's many attractions. Over the past few years it has undergone some major changes and is now recognised as one of the Country’s leading specialist museums.

Situated just south of Manchester in the leafy countryside of Higher Poynton, the museum is on the site of the old Anson Colliery. It is the result of Les Cawley and Geoff Challinor's years of hard work collecting and restoring engines. This award winning museum houses a unique collection of over 200 gas and oil engines, many maintained in running order ranging from early Crossley gas engines through to more modern diesels. Engine enthusiasts from all over the world come to visit ...this fascinating museum.

The new Les & Ena Cawley Memorial Building will be the home of a fantastic display showing the development of the internal combustion engine. The museum has secured many early examples from other major museums eg Science Museums of London, Edinburgh, Birmingham & Bristol. This will allow it to tell the story of the engine from the cannon to the sophisticated, electronically controlled engine of the future. The museum also has an enviable display of local history items such as photographs, maps, mementoes and keepsakes from the Vernon Estate and Anson Colliery.

The engines run every day the museum is open but the third Sunday in the month is a Steam Day and as our visit coincides with that, we will be treated to the extra attraction of at least two steam engines operating. On site there is a tearoom selling drinks and confectionary, a shop selling books, dvds and videos and children’s fun sheets and quiz.

On the subject of the tearoom, the staff have advised that it is only a tearoom and doesn’t sell sandwiches etc. However, they are more than happy for Members to bring along their own lunch and snacks to be eaten in there.

There is free parking so look out for the Section sail banner and gather there around 12 noon. Note: the first steam engine runs at 12.30pm so we need to be in the Museum by then. The museum is open from 10.00am until 5.00pm and admission is £6.50 for adults, £6.00 for senior concessions, £2.50 for children aged between 12 and 16 with under 12s free. It has been confirmed that if we get over 15 Members we will receive the group discount so be sure to meet on time under the banner. .

Full details of the museum, including links to other similar attractions, can be found on their website http://www.enginemuseum.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks Steve :-D I must have been very near there once many years ago. A Place called Wythenshawe. I spent a week there one afternoon...

Seriously, I'd love to go to the museum. It's just my thing. Would you mind terribly if a southerner gatecrashed your meeting?

About 2 and a half hours up from you Jim. Up the M1 to 29A, off at Chesterfield, and over the Pennines, through the Peak District parks area, Wigley, Buxton etc. Perfect for an Activa. You'd love it.

I used to do this route quite often when I worked down here but my girlfriend lived in Buxton..

Sounds like a good do, I'll have to remember that for next time I'm up that direction.
