hydraulic pump seals - update

Post by shaunthesheep »

hi folks,
just to let you all know that i replaced two of the 'o' rings under the torx bolts on my hydraulic pump, i did'nt manage to stop the weeping, but did manage to slow it down also found out that it's leaking from the front plate (plate next to pulley).
NOTE for all you who want to attemped this task be very careful, lots of little bits, will now list as parts come out of pump:-
1. TORX BOLT - T50
2. SPRING - 2.5 - 3.0 cm
3. DOMED CAP - 5mm in size
4. BALL BEARING @ 3mm IN SIZE
5. PISTON - NOT ALWAYS SEEN
might consider getting a garage to replace the pump with a new one from andyspares, as replacement involes removal of the drivebelt etc (never done by me), but if any of you fellas have removed the above PLEASE let me know.
chat soon

Dom,
I don't understand how you managed to change the seals without removing the belt??
Removing the belt is not that bad - depends on whether you've got air con or not (on a TD anyway). With air con you have a spring loaded tensioner which you need to lock up before you take the belt off - this is the most difficult bit, as there is no room. You need a long allen key, or a piece of bent rod (I think my mate and I bent an old screwdriver). The bolt on the manual tensioner on the bottom can be a git too, as it is allen key, and tends to round out. I seem to remember also that one of the mounting bolts for the pump is accessed through a hole in the pulley.

richard,
right, do you know the 6 torx head bolts that go round the hp pump?.
undo one of these and bob's your uncle there is an o ring, so no need to remove the belt as managed to change the 2 leaking seals in situ.
also regarding removing the belt, is it possable to replace the tensioner allen key bolt with a torx version?, to stop it rounding off in the future. and any ideas as to where i cound get a torx bolt from.

to replace the tensioner and belt is simple just did mine approx 1 hour including 1/2 an hour to remove the rounded bolt on bottom of tensioner, bolt has a big flange on it so i think you would have difficulty finding one the same other than the original, beware my local Citroen dealer said i would have to purchase a pack of 10 as they would have to be ordered in and they would have difficulty in using the rest (what a joke) i also have a zx which uses the same bolt as i sure does a bx ,after complaining they sold me one for the grand sum of 86p cheers dave
