Anti Sink

Post by andy99 »

Are the anti sink spheres supposed to stop the car from sinking even the slightest bit once the engine is turned off, or just stop it sinking all the way to the bottom? My xantia sinks a bit at the back when the ignition is turned off. The amount it sink varies, but I always have to wait for the back to come up when I start up. Is this normal or do I need a new anti sink sphere??? It never sinks right to the bottom though.

It shouldn't sink any once the engine stops, providing all the valve gear is in good fettle.
Its unlikely to have had a new anti sink sphere during its 7 year life so I would go ahead and get one stuck on anyway.

The anti sink sphere will also affect the ride quality from the rear suspension because its directly connected to the rear suspension circuit, oil will be forced into this sphere as well as the suspension sphere's during upward movement of the suspension arm's.

Thanks Dave
I have just checked the documents that came with the car and you where right. The other spheres where changed in 2000 but the anti-sink sphere wasnt. It it a fairly straight forward job to do?

Ive been thinking!!!! If the suspension isnt supposed to sink when the engine is turned off, then the next time you start the car it will be at the correct height. So why have hydraulic suspension in the first place?????????????

Hehehe Andy DONT DO ANY MORE THINKING<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
Its called "self leveling suspension" no matter how much weight is in the car, it always returns to the same height level.
This means the car always maintains the same attitude, the suspension geometry doesn't change and the handling characteristic remain the same, you wont find things twiddly headlight load adjusting knobs on a hydro cit, now you know why.
When I say it shouldn't sink with the engine off, that does not mean it wont sink back to the normal level when you get out of it, it will, but it shouldn't go below that point for a long long time.
There are cars out there with steel springs you know, when these are compressed with load, they stay compressed.
There are one or two post's about at the moment concerning the removal of the a/s sphere, its an easey job so have a read.
Don't forget to de-pressurise first and make sure its safe to go under, which means axle stands.
