LHM Reservoir

Post by andy99 »

Just updating. I have checked the level with the car at full height. It is about 3.5 inches from the top. Since taking out the 2 jam jars of lhm if i tap the needle it does bounce slightly but returns to the top of the bubble. I am confident that the needle is working ok. Brake pads are ok still plenty left on them. Should i empty some more fluid out or should i just leave it?????
cheers
Andy
I have just discovered that the LHM Reservoir on my xantia (1995 1.9TD) has been over filled. The neddle is stuck right at the top of the bubble. I have taken out 2 jam jars full of lhm and yet the needle is still at the top. I am testing with the engine running and the suspension at full height.
Will it harm to have the reservoir so full? Even on the lowest suspension setting there is still plenty of room for the fluid.
Also on the top is a cap marked LHM. It doesnt seem to fit very tight and there is a pipe coming out of it which isnt connected to anything. Is this an overflow pipe??? If so i have had no fluid forced out, so is it ok to leave the reservoir as full as it is??
Cheers
Andy

Are you sure the reservoir is really too full?
These indicator needles do have a tendancy to stick on the max line sometimes.

Andy,
Depending on the state of your brake pads (worn pads allow the pistons to move out substantially and you "loose" a fair amount of LHM in the cylinders), with the car in it's highest position, you should have about 3 - 4 inches of space between the top of the reservoir and the LHM level inside it.

", so is it ok to leave the reservoir as full as it is??"
Andy,
Don't worry about it. I've had all sorts of amounts of LHM in mine & I now use my index finger as the measuring stick. If the tip of my finger just gets wet, then I'm happy. If it doesn't, I top it up 'till it does; if it gets wet up to the knuckle I say "Oh..$#.+, I've put too much in" and drive off. If it's far too full, it'll come out via the overflow which should be directed into a harmless position. Failing that, there may come the day when a return line springs a leak and you'll be glad there was enough in there to get you home.
When you give it its next LHM change and filter clean, just top it up a bit more carefully and use the old index finger trick and forget that silly yellow disc; they only put them there to worry people.
