I have been quoted £270 by Kwick Fit to install front and read brakes for the ZX Volcane 1.9i. Is that pricey or OK?

If you are talking just pad's, then that price is an absolute rip off.
If it includes the disc's it's still high, you will pay just over £100 for disc's and pad's to do it yourself.
You can get better than a Kwick Fit fitter, I know someone that was a fitter for them, the thing's he's told me <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

if it is that just for pads it is expensive, but i doubt it as kwik fit will recommend you have discs too. (i know i was a kwik fit brake fitter) hope it include haveing fluid changed as well? i'm sure a citroen secailist, local to you can do it for a simular price, plus they will be much more familular with your car

i agree kwik fit is sell sell sell they send there fitters on courses to learn how to do it i went on 3 sell/customer relation courses and only 1 techie course, i am not the kwik fit fitter (or should that be Sh***er) that dave knows just an ex one that agrees!
As for the price if you feel ripped off you probally have been
but if you are happy to pay that and the car is 100% safe you can't put a price on that can you?

Just a little after thaught. If you have been in the same line of employment for a while, you can start to get dissillusioned, this goes for mechanics as well, regardless of whether or not they are specialists. ( This is not a blanket statement and is in no way meant to offend any of our more experienced forum members, who by the fact they are taking time out to reply to members shows the level of their integrity<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>) You can not always expect a good level of competence in a job, I recently had some body work done by an established bodyshop, they quoted the job, replace wing, respray rear quarter panels. I walked in to see how thing were progressing they had beaten and filled the wing and had simply tapped the small dents out of my rear quarters and left the small scratches there. Not to mention all the internal and external panel fixings they broke, but didn't replace. I have gone somewhat off the line of the original question, but my advise would be. Get a small toolkit, a trolley jack and axel stands, buy a Haynes manual, and spend an afternoon trying the job yourself, you will reap the rewards. Not to mention you will save a packet. And if you run in to difficulty , the Forum members are always here to help. You may even enjoy it. I myself have no automotive qualifications but started DIY a few years ago, I just completed a cylinder head swap on my ZX TD, no mean feat I tell you, ask the other members. Go on get stuck in.
