ZX TD TUNING

Post by buddster »

Hi there all,
Just wondering if any of you have had any experience of a tuning package on your Turbo Diesel from places such as Allard Turbo Sports, Van Aaken or Cituning. They claim an 18bhp increase obtained via fueling and boost calibration or something? Prices range from £125 to £400 for what sounds like the same job?
Cheers.

Any company offering tuning on the XUD9TE 1.9td engines are basically doing the same thing as far as I can see. That is adjusting the diesel pump (theres 3 adjusters), adjusting the wastegate on the turbo, and upping the boost. I know on the Van Aaaken conversion they also manage to stop the engine from overfuelling. You've probably all followed hard driven diesel turbos belching black smoke as the pump dumps far too much fuel in the engine ( a kind of crude governor).
I know that on the Van Aaken conversion they also fit an adjustable valve (on my ZX it was cable tied to the RH inner wng) to set the boost to the optimum level. I don't know whether some of the other companies do this as well.
I had the Van Aaken "diesel sport" upgrade done on an old K reg ZX TD about 4 years ago, I think that they claimed about 110 bhp. Yep, it was fast, also more torque, and black smoke was reduced. Having said that I've owned 3 more diesel turbo's since, and have left them fairly standard apart from some slight adjustments to the pump.
If "Dr Diesel" Dave Burns is reading he may have some more comments on this subject.I personanlly find the standard 92bhp OK, although admit that my present ZX smokes like a bitch when I work it hard.
If you see a red ZX TD belching smoke on the M4 that'll be me.

The 1.9 td engine is easy enough to tune yourself, I've tuned my xantia td a little but intend to do some further work on it.
There are several things you can do ...
Advancing the injection pump timing a little, just loosen the injection pump bolt and turn the pump toward the engine a very small amount. This will make the engine a little more clattery at idle though.
Increase the boost pressure - buy a boost gauge (about £20) and adjust the waste gate, (methods to do this vary with type of turbo fitted) boost pressure has to be measured driving the car, not just revving the engine when stationary. Mine as standard was about .75 bar and now runs at 1.0 bar.
Increase the fuelling by adjusting the screw until when under hard acceleration the car smokes, then back off the adjustment a little.
This should make quite a difference, especially to mid range torque. It has made my xantia much easier to live with, towing is much more bearable now.
Final thing I will do to mine is change the silencer to a glasspack type one with a higher thru flow, this should make the turbo spin up a little quicker and make the boost come in a little sooner.
Just make sure you change the oil and check all is well with the cooling etc My Xantia Td cost £900 so its not the end of the world if it blows up on me!
Have fun

I HAVE ALSO USED VAN-AAKEN AND FOUND THEM O.K. THE COST WAS £295+VAT (in 1986) AND POWER WAS BOOSTED FROM THE 90BHP STANDARD UP TO 115BHP BUT I DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT IT ENTAILED AS I COULDNT SEE THE DEED BEING DONE, BUT I AM FAIRLY SURE THEY DID NOT TOUCH THE TURBO - SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE EMISSIONS ON MOT TESTS. LET US KNOW WHICH OPTION YOU CHOICE AND HOW YOU GET ON.

Where's me stethoscope, hmmm let me see now, hehe enough already.
There are two other adjustment's that can be done, and these are the main one's as far as tuning goes, but they require the removal of the diaphragm cover from the top of the pump.
It's a bit difficult to explain without drawing's but if anyone's interested in meddeling about in there I'll give it a try.

Thanks "Doc"
If you would'nt mind trying to explain a bit more? I'm fairly "au fait" with the Bosch pumps. What I would like to do is try and reduce overfuelling on full throttle, which is one of the benefits of the Van Aaken conversion. Can you shed any light on that? I'd be gratefull. If its too complicated to explain on here either don't worry, or send me an email if you get time.

Hi Jon, thought I'd trawl the net for any pic's on the subject, it paid off, the vehicle's being tweaked are not Cit's, far from it but they have the same Bosch VE Distributor fuel pump's, the only difference is in the number of cylinder's supplied by the pump.
If you take the diaphragm cover off, be sure to lift it without turning it, there is a dot mark on the metal part of the diaphragm that will enable you to re-set it's original position if need be, providing a note is made of it that is, there is light spring pressure under the cover aswell.
Don't think I need to go any further, it's all pretty well explained as you will see, but to reduce boost fuel and the smoke that goes with it, the guide pin need's to ride on a higher part of the controll cone.
The site is dodgeram.org click on diesel engine and then 1989-1993 more power.

[/quote]Hello all, just a quick one. I recently had trouble with my Bosch pump, it was leaking through the throttle, so I trawled the net looking for info on the Bosch VE. I found a site through TekHeads forum. It gives a good breakdown of most of the adjustments you can make to the pump and there is a nice diagram of the diaphram/spring and plunger assembly you spoke of. It is aimed at the large Dodge trucks in America, but they use the same pump, so the info is applicable. The site is http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/more_power/Power_ve.htm

Thanks (Dr)Dave and Gareth for that, that website is really useful.
I'll have a tinker this weekend when I finally get round to servicing the old ZX.
Cheers

Why not try a Peugeot site www.peugeotsportclub.com/forums. I got info for tunning my ZX TDI along with info about a Cam change etc. They are basically the same engines, some with Bosch and Lucas pumps.
