Jim,

Now that official support is ended for phpbb2, have you found an unoffical support stream for any future security security issues?

Jim, on the phpbb3 forum, is it running the prosilver or subsilver2 theme?

Yes, there are third-party supporters out there thankfully, and a good archive of stuff on the phpbb site.

Xac, currently running prosilver on the phpBB3 test board.

From looking around, prosilver could be the reason the phpbb3 site is loading slower.
It's been suggested that loading subsilver2 gives it phpbb2 speed.
It also puts the poster information on the left again :D
Could be an idea to try, would get us phpbb3 with the future support, yet run with the speed and ease of what we're used to?

Question.

If these are alternative skins why can't one be chosen as default (the fastest loading one obviously) and then have a choice box somewhere to tick for alternative skins?

Then it's up to each forum user to see whether the performance hit from their preferred skin is acceptable.

The problem with that is it seriously complicates things with regards to forum mods, they have to be applied to every single style.
When some mods can take 5 hours or more to apply, having to do that to more than one style is far too much hassle to be practical.

IMHO and from an administration and developer point of view, i much prefer PHPBB3, but quite frankly it's down to the developer to chose the best option for him/her! A forum can be uber powerful but if the man at the top shares no love with it, eventually the walls will come tumbling down.

I am planning to migrate this forum and the BXC across to the new host very early on Wednesday morning.

I shall shut down the forums on the old host at around 05:00 and bring them up on the new host. This will take around an hour to move the databases.

The forums will have a new IP address and this may take a while to propagate around the world's DNS servers.

All is sitting ready to go and you can get a sneak preview of the final test site here

I will do everything in my power to keep the downtime to a minimum.

This move is being hastened due to sickness in both the old webhost and the database server.

I shall post tomorrow that we are go to migrate after one more round of final testing.

A Late Correction:

The migration now must take place tomorrow morning. The database server UPS is dying and I'm worried that if the power fails to the server it may not restart...

Sorry for the short notice.
