All, (96 Xantia 1.8 )
Despite all the warnings here and in the haynes manual I think i've over lossened the depresurising screw on the Hydraulic regulator.
(It won't go tight !!)
Is there anything I can do to recover this or do I need a new Regulator ?
Any response much appreciated - Urgent assitance required - Im covered in Grease and need to get this job finished !..

Don't panic!!
Have a feeling I did this once and we found that there is a seal/"O" ring inside that the is obviously fitted in a groove; it pops out if it gets screwed out too far. If you exert inward pressure as you are screwing in, I think you'll find the thread will eventually grab. If all else fails, you may have to take the regulator out of the car to be able to start it.
One thing's for sure; you usually don't forget when to stop the next time you slacken one off <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> If you think it feels too hard for an "O" ring, just remeber that in a situation such as this, they can tend to use a semi solid type material similar to that found in the steering pinion seals.
Hope my memory has served me correctly, but I think I'm right.

I may be talking though my ars e here but here goes.
When I releasd the pressure on the suspension system at the front central spere mounting - I undid the bolt to far ( I expected to here a great 'woooooosh') the spring and ball bearing fell on the floor along with my heart expecting Gallons of green slime to follow. But no.
I replaced the ball bearing and then the spring (cleaned them first) and replaced the bolt. It all went back in fine and suspension worked. I wondered if you had a bit missing that was causing the prolem or the bits inside need to be realigned ! ?
This may be different to your problem ??
If you have stripped the thread a good engineering company can fit a 'helicoil' for you. It is a metal insert that gives a new thread face. You will need to remove the unit I guess to be able to take to the company.
Can any one confirm if you can helicoil this part.
Look on the bright side - if the garage did what you did they would charge you for it

Thanks for your comments, unfortunately I think I buggered the Thread and there was no rescuing it, in the time - needed to get the thing back on the road.
I got a second hand one at the local scrappy - £ 35.00, so painfull mistake - but Not one I will ever make again.
Problem is I spent all day fiddling with that and never got round to doing the Job I wanted to do.
I'll try again this weekend.

Do us a favour if you will.
When you swap it over, have a close look at it & let us know where it went all wrong unless of course you pulled it out & tried to screw it in cross threaded with a spanner. Also what is supposed to be in behind it.
It's more than curiosity; it may just save someone else making the same mistake.

At the moment I've slung it in the corner and have not wanted to think about it, I'm playing with some other jobs (see the other thread with my name on it !)
However, Curiosity has been starting to get at me so when I get 5 minutes I will dismantle it and work out what went wrong and if there is anything I could have done to rectify the situation.
Just a point I never actually took the screw out all the way, I just unwound it further than the recommended 1 turn and it wouldn't go tight on the way back !
I'll post any findings when I 've ripped it apart.

A point to note guys - my last Xantia, 1993 TD LX needed a new regulator - went round the scrap yards and was quoted £50 for one, but there are 5 different types.
Popped into our local "French Vehicle Services" garage, who had a G reg BX 1.9TD estate - with the EXACT same regulator - cost? £20.
Well worth looking into if you ever need to replace one.
