I've now reached the point where I have a test FCF working that I'm reasonably happy with.

Given the choice, I'd like to remain with phpBB2 as I'm far from happy with either the performance, usability or looks of phpBB3 and much prefer the clean simplicity of phpBB2.

Please give me your thoughts. At www.xantiav6.co.uk/forum you'll find the complete phpBB2 ready to go (in fact it was built from this morning's backup) and at www.xantiav6.co.uk/forum3 you can see the best job I can do with phpBB3. It's out of date by a week or so.

Compare the two and let me know your preferences.

I now start the same work on the BXC.

I'm currently planning to cut over to the new server one day next week. It will involve downtine which I'll keep to a minimum. More news on that nearer the time.

All comments welcome.

PHPBB2
Loads fast, easy to diferenciate between posts especially when browsing from my phone.
Just needs a different style theme to the standard subSilver ;)

PHPBB3
Slow to load, with the poster's details on the right rather than left it's more difficult to tell where one post stops and the next starts.

[-X Just my last two posts please Jim. Don't know what happened there as I thought I'd clicked EDIT - must go to specsavers.

But as I say, the forum looked no different to me. Perhaps it's one of those IE cache problems at my end?

/forum is this exact forum running (PHPBB2) on the new server Jim has set up.
/forum3 is this exact forum running under PHPBB3 on the new server Jim has set up.

Thanks xac.
I really need to slow down, making far too many mistakes. I found a fantastic article read last night and couldn't put it down when I should have.

Jim

Your hard work is much appreciated. It's just a pity that it's been forced upon you and the results aren't really to your satisfaction.

I have to say that I also prefer the look of the old forum in BB2. As I'm not an Arabic or Hebrew scholar I read from left to right and prefer my poster details on the left. There also needs to be better differentiation between each poster, perhaps a slightly different shade for successive posts.

Whatever you can do please...

I've used the newer version elsewhere. It looks a little odd at first, but you soon get used to it.

Jim, I'm unsure what the benefits of the new version are. So if I were you, I'd do whichever is easiest for you! :)

The bb3 page is a bit on the blank side at the moment. I have seen it on other forums and I too am not greatly impressed with it, can't see any immediate advantages over the one we are familiar with.
It may not be the ritziest appearance wise but it fulfils its function admirably.
About the only advantage I can think of at the minute is the image uploading and automatic resizing that is available.

Can I just take this opportunity to ask everyone to please limit the image width to about 670 pixels - one of the default sizes for Photobucket and Imageshack.
- or post a clickable thumbnail if you want it to be viewable in a larger size.
Thanks,

Well if going by the two links at this very moment, only PHPBB2 is working, fate?

I like the simplicity of our current setup. Nice contrast of colours, not too many faffy images (useful for when I'm viewing from my mobile) and its quicker because of it.
I've got no problem with the current linking externally to YouTube videos, after all, its only an extra click!

Jim, how about giving us a list of what can be customised? No point taking opinions of how pretty or ugly it is if it can't be altered

If the real burning question is should we go or should we stay - we might as well make the move sooner than later IMO.
