ZX 1.9TD glowplugs

Post by Gaskin »

I need to replace one or more glowplugs on a 96 1.9TD ZX estate. Any advice and comments?
Cheers

Hi Duncan, when you remove the intercooler the first thing to do is cover the manifold intake to prevent anything falling in, it has been known, wont mention any names.......ERNIE.
Make sure the replacement plug's are for the turbo engine, n/a engine plug's can screw up the relay.
Use common sense when tightening them back up and smear some anti sieze compound like copper grease on the thread's.
While you have the intercooler off, examine the leakoff pipe's and the cap on the last injector, they split and allow air in, this is a common cause of difficult starting, and if suspected priming the pump with a dozen squeeses of the rubber bulb will more often than not get it started.
Good luck

The Glow Plug on the far left (nearest the timing belt + behind the fuel pump) can be an absolute g*t to replace - You'll need a pair of stong small hands if it hasn't been changed for a while!
A friend managed to change the remaining three plugs but I took my '94 ZX 1.9TD to my local citroen specialist who changed it for approx 20 quid as I didn't want risk shearing the plug's head!
Best of luck and prepare to use your entire swearing vocabulary as well as lose your knuckle skin!

Dear Ben and Dave,
Thanks for the advice. I managed to change 3 of the plugs, but without a suitable cranked spanner the 4th was beyond hope! All 3 old ones looked fine with no bits missing or burnt off (always nice to see), but since I could not check them I replaced them anyway. Fortunately the wife took the kids out for the day so my extensive vocab did not offend. Unfortunately she also took both sets of Citroen keys a fact I did not discover until I disconnected the battery which set off the alarm. Reconnecting the battery shut it up, but armed the motion sensors... anyway result was a flat battery (possibly on the way out). So the initial start up had to wait until a suitable boost could be found. This of course added to an already longer than expected job, but hey what else is Sunday for?
Of course I'm sure it now starts better than before.....
Once I get the right spanner and summon up enough energy I will go after the last one tucked behind the fuel pump, I can see it and it will be mine!
My advice to anyone else would be invest in a good quality cranked 12mm spanner and a deep 12mm socket (Halfords sell these) with a 1/4'' drive, and allow several hours of 'how the hell do I reach that' time. I also recommend one of those long grab things for picking up small nuts that get dropped and fall into inaccessible places. As usual the Haynes manual was none too helpful.
Cheers

I did not have to remove my inter-cooler to renew my Glow Plugs, just use a combination spanner, 1/4" drive socket and grease to remove wiring lug nuts and a deep socket with extensions etc.
