Air conditioning system

Post by Robbie »

Could someone help me find out if my air conditioning system is working ok, It seems to take a while to start blowing cold air (about 5 minutes) and even then I’m not sure if it’s as cold as it should be, it’s the first car I’ve had with air conditioning so not sure how it good it should be. I bought a Haynes book on the Xantia and it says to check the top of the drier bottle for a red or blue indicater and also the refrigerant flow, I can see the refrigerant flow and that seems ok but I can’t find the coloured indicaters. Are they actually on the same bottle as the flow indicater or somewhere else? If it’s a case that I need the system to be recharged, it tells me I have to take it to a Citroen garage to be done, how much should I expect to pay for it? (Xantia 98 new shape).

I too have a 98 Xantia, and this starts blowing cold air within 10s of switch on. I wouldn't say the system is as effective as that on some other cars though. It sounds like your pressure is low, my car also does not have the coloured indicators at all, the haynes manual says these are only fitted to some systems. I wouldn't trust anything the Haynes manual says anyway.
Take it for a pressure check!

Most Citroën garages know as much about A/C as they do about auto gearboxes! (i.e. very little). In most cases they call in an A/C company to do the work for them and then charge you an exorbitant price. I would recommend that you find a local A/C specialist, if you don't know where to look, try and find a local yankeemobil club, all of them have collosal A/C systems and the're bound to know where you can find someone who really knows what the're doing.

The colored indicator is on the same bottle as the flow indicator. I have it on my car (Xantia 94 2.0i aut ac) I had it refilled at a local A/C company (recommended by the Citroen garage) Took about 10 min to do. Make sure you get the correct refrigerant! You should not see any bubbles in the flow indicator window.

Unless there is a genuine fault, I would assume that the A/C on a 98 car would not have lost too much refrigerant yet. Mine is older and is still working OK. I had a temp. problem - car getting too cold! My local Citroen garage suggested an a/c specialist as they didn't have the gear. However I found the fault was with the interior temp. sensor. This is the little slotted panel on the dash with the red alarm flashing LED in the middle. Inside there is an a tiny fan which draws the interior air over an RTD. The fan wasn't working! All good stuff.
