Hi Ronnie - The earlier handbooks suggested 70000miles but it's wise to change before 40000. The cost of a new belt is peanuts compared with the repair bill on an engine with a broken belt.

Not directly related but I have just changed the belt on a 98 Xantia td at 51000 miles, thats 21000 miles sooner than the service interval of 72000.
The belt that came off had a crack all along it's width at the root of one of the teeth and nearly half way through the depth of the belt, I don't think it would have done another 10000 never mind 21000, if it was possible to post picture's here I would go and take one of it as a warning to other's of the possible looming disaster.
