the particle filter is in the exhaust behind the cat,to change it unscrew the cat temp sensor & the 2 pressure sensor pipes, after that its just the same as changing any other part of the exhaust.
The Eolys fluid is in a seperate tank next to the fuel tank on the left hand side of the car,it is filled with a pipe that comes with the kit & is similar to a hospital drip (ie gravity fed).unfortunately the system has to be reset using a citroen diagnostic computer to put the Light/warning message out on the dash or the system will not operate correctly.

C5 particle filter and eolys fluid.

Its best to remove the mid exhaust section. You may need new exhaust clamps and a new metallic gasket for the filter. Clean the particle filter with a pressure washer flushing back and fwd flushing till no more soot or ash comes out. I'm not convinced that the additive fluid level needs resetting as long as you keep it topped up. The Eolys fluid is expensive £70 from a main dealer. I've not found any other source for this fluid yet anyone know a cheaper source? The dealer failed to reset the fault warning for low diesel additive on my 2.2 HDI and claimed it needed a new ECU (£300 or more) I didn't let them do that and the fault went away and I assume that the additive pump still works as it can be heard after a trip to the filling station. Hopefully I'm not doing any damage to my particle filter!

Volvo have particulate filters on their latest diesel trucks. The special fluid is called AdBlue. I've no idea if it is compatible with the PSA-system, but the same system is used in Renault trucks. Since I don't have a vehicle with a particulate filter, I havn't investigated it further, but I assume that truckers wouldn't tolerate the rediculous prices PSA are asking for their "special" fluid.

i would be wary of using any cheap fluids if they become available, there are actualy 2 different types of fluid for the citroen FAP system depending on the RP number of the car,the early fluid (Eolys DPX 42) is NOT compatible or interchangeable with the later fluid (Eolys 176).mixing the 2 fluids will damage the system.the later system only needs changing at 75,000 miles & only needs 3 litres for a complete refill.

If my understanding is correct the flilet itself is of sintered metal and soot and particles are burnt off periodically. The Eolys fluid is based of Cerium - a rare earth metal which has catalytic qualities and is also used in oven linings and the use of this stuff allows the filter to get hot enough to burn off the soot.

From the look of it there are other systems around and Citroen may have chosen to use the one that is most expensive to maintain.

thats correct, the problem is cerium is organic based & cannot be burnt off & eventually clogs the filter hence the need to replace/clean it.
