Netbook for diagnostics

Post by doctle »

I'm thinking about bidding on a netbook for diagnostics on eBay, mostly because it's cheap. Specs on the netbook / laptop / 1.6ghz, 1GB RAM, 250GB hard-drive I can upgrade to 2gig ram easy enough. Would this be powerful enough for diagnostics? It has windows 7 home but I could probably install xp if needs be. I have looked at a few Lexia Service box listings they say different specs needed from w10 to xp depending on the seller. Thanks

As long as it's Win7 Home #32BIT#, 1 GB of ram is fine for the diag kit but it's on the very bottom limit for Win7, it would be easier to add a gig of ram than change to XP.
Have you got a link to the item on ebay? How much is it? Old laptops these days are really cheap.

10 inch screen, I hope you have good eyes, although it doesn't say, it must be 32 bit or it wouldn't run on 1gb of ram. My Lenovo T400 is about as small as I'd like (14 inch). Your eyes are probably a lot better than mine though.

I would not recommend a netbook - they just don't have the welly and additionally - be aware that many of these also have to power the graphics with the available system RAM - so that further reduces capability and it will likely struggle to the point of being unusable for running Diagbox and any live data.

I use a Lenovo X200 4Gb RAM without any issues.

I am using a Toshiba NB250 with 2GB RAM (and Windows 7), and it does a decent job of running my Lexia.

Hows about this? 2gig ram relatively fast chip. Some guys use a phone app so 10" screen should be ok with the goggles on?

Still underpowered, I would avoid. You would also have to purchase an operating system licence too as he has Linux installed on it that is not compatible with Diagbox.

You really need something standard like I linked to before. If you note in the description, he said he had Linux on because it was too slow with Windows. So I cannot see it coping with Diagbox very well.

If you have a budget in mind, let me know and I'll have a hunt about for you.

If that has the n570 atom chip, it only has a benchmark of 570, to give you idea my Lenovo Thinkpad T400 has 1624, and that's not quick. I'd go for a laptop instead of a netbook, win7 32 bit pre-installed with 2gb of ram. Also get one with a verified battery otherwise you can't take it for a drive and will be running extension leads up the drive. When you find one, note the model, google the specs to find out what processor is in it, then check the processor capabilities. To do that that google '#processor name# benchmark' and have a look at the figure on the 'Passmark' site. You want something around 1500 or higher.

^ 4Gb minimum I would recommend - as although the 32 bit OS will only use just over 3Gb, some systems share the RAM with any on-board graphics - so that cuts the available RAM down further in a 2Gb system. A 4Gb sysem will allow just over 3Gb for the OS and the rest can be utilised by the graphics processor - hence speeding things up significantly on these systems.

For clarification, can it be a 64-bit laptop as long as the OS is a 32 bit OS, then it will work?
