Chip readng

Post by MikeT »

Does anyone have experience of reading ECU's they'd like to share?

Specifically, what cheap hardware/software will work with my cars?

I would get the Lexia clone from Easy Diagnostics. Not cheap, but it works (and will work with a C5 X7).

Is that not something that a Galletto lead does?

And that's as much as I know about the subject...

Just noticed something whilst looking up some info for a friend on this engine Mike - came across this little nugget amongst the engine ECU and as this thread was quite recent...

Bosch EDC16 C34 (which is the ECU used on both the C5 II and the X7 1.6 DV6TED4 FAP 110s
New 32 bit engine ECU with "anti-tuning" strategy, larger internal memory, a single injection bank for the 4 diesel injectors
So this will be one of those ECUs that needs to be removed, as it has to be tuned 'on the bench' and not via the OBD II port.

These people seem to be able to tune the later hdi:

https://www.etuners.gr/tag/citroen/

I have the impression that it is done through the obd port. It must be possible, as it is the only way for dealers to update the firmware and maps.

Firmware is the not the same as an engine map surely?

And maps (for those cars that have satnav) are updated using a DVD, SD card or USB stick.

The engine map is stored in the same flash memory as the firmware, and written at the same time.

If you PM Trianman he knows a first class remapper who may be able to assist.

He means an engine ECU ‘re-map’ Paul. :-D

These have to be updatable by the dealer, but in the case of this specific injection ECU (Bosch EDC16 C34)- probably require direct PSA server access, that a chip tuner won’t have, and may possibly not have access to certain areas of in any case, if they did purchase access and used an Actia clone.

Some of these ECUs like the above therefore have to be removed, opened up and re-mapped using certain software to bypass any tuning protection.

All remaps can be overwritten by a dealer download I suspect during application of a TSB or routine ECU update check, which is why some tuners keep a backup file of the map so it can be applied where this has happened.

Probably will cost you to have it re-applied again though!

Yes, I'd like to look into remapping, who wouldn't with the offering of free power and/or economy plus all the other possible personalisations etc? Though my most pressing desire if I'm honest, is to make changes that are frowned upon by this forum so I won't mention it... but it pertains to the letters E G and R :D

Currently I also want to read the C3 so I can retrieve the Key Code as the previous owner failed to provide it. AFAIK, this code is stored in both the BSI and the ECU so that gives me two angles of attack.

I'd just cough up the £15 to get the Transponder, Key and Confidential Code all in one hit for the C3. I think there is different kit needed to do different things so can be expensive.

From what little I've learned, Galletto appears to be the best choice (at least for my cars) by far. It even claims to read and write to the infamous EDC16C34 via OBD.

The codes are in my possession, I just need to extract them.
There are many kits out there and like mechanical tools, a professional will need a fair selection at his disposal but I just want something that will work reliably for me. Once the files can be read and written, it's down to using the right software to manipulate the data. Yeah, it's eye-wateringly expensive Marc, much like Diagbox and Service Citroen access so the choice is made more difficult in finding the best clone.

I did manage to read my C5's ECU the other day using a cheap MPPS clone but I've yet to establish if the file is complete or uncorrupted. As you know, a known-good backup is essential before making any changes. I wouldn't trust MPPS to make a clean write either so it's essential I find the tool that will and as you mentioned earlier, the safest way known to write to ECU's is to use the debugging port on the board.

The file I downloaded from the ECU appears to be in-tact and using an editor, can see the maps but that's about as far I got. Deciphering is going to the steep learning curve for me.
But I'm told I've got the flash memory file and that there's also data held on the eeprom but I don't think MPPS offers read/write option.
