Renault Trafic won't start 1st thing in the morning

Post by john »

1.9dci

Ive changed the glow plugs and the maf but 1st thing in the morning it won't start unless I use easy start, once it's started it runs fine and will happily start all day long it's just that 1st initial start that's the problem.

Any ideas?

Are the glow-plugs actually receiving power, pre-heat and post-heat?

They should be glowing bright orange hot at the tip (on the bench, with 12v applied).
Although individually working, are they actually getting power (at least 11v, all four operating) on the car?

So, went out to have a look at the glow plug relay, as I didn't have the ignition on the central locking kept locking the van, so, put the keys in and turned the ignition on, removed and disconnected the glow plug relay a few times, contacts look nice and clean and dry, turned the key and she fired right up, so I'm think it's either been a bad earth or connection on the relay, or, the fact the plugs were left on for about 2 minutes did the job, we'll find out tomorrow when I try and start it almost immediately

First time in 3 weeks it started without easy start though 😊

Check out that relay thoroughly.
GPs should be receiving at least 11v, and pulling about 9-10A each (so c40A in total).

Check injector leak-off.

You'll most likely have at least one dodgy injector.

injectors seem fine, runs great and when you disconnect the injector plug you can hear the difference

Unless you've actually checked the leak-off you can't accurately state they are fine.

The ability to finely atomise multiple times on a stroke is more important in modern diesels than glow plugs are.
