Bought a 54 plate Modus 1.5dci.

Post by demag »

You have to laugh. Picked it up the other day with fresh mot, 79k on the clock. It drives well but was pulling left, on inspection found OSF tyre punctured, split and bald. NSF tyre bald. The mot as a certificate of road worthiness is a joke, mates rates apply to all dodgy dealers. On Saturday I had two new budget tyres fitted and balanced £73.

I've got to ask why you didn't test drive it and spot the pulling, and the bald tyres before you parted with cash, MOT cert or not..

I did test drive and asked about the pulling. At the time the tyres were pumped up..... He did get the tracking done and also fitted a new battery which was a bit sluggish which I have the receipt for. From the side the tyres didn't look all that bad however now they're done it's actually quite nice. Had a drive out and did Sunday lunch yesterday. 58mpg so not bad. I'll get the cambelt and waterpump done and hopefully it will last into retirement.

Generally I accept that tires/brakes/fluids are standing service items when I get a car anyway...I cost it in to the budget I set myself

Hi Demag,

Do you know the power rating of the engine? The 1.5s can give some really impressive MPG.

Yes I always budget for a few extras. The "unknowns" so to speak, there's always something.
It's a Dynamique dci 80 Steve. Presumably 80bhp? The performance is not startling, more adequate. But I do have a Tunit diesel chip......
Actually on the couple of times I've pushed it, it does pick up it's skirts and get a bit of a hustle on.
On my MkII Scenic I could see 60mpg on the motorway when it actually decided to run, and that was a seven seater so I reckon this will be similar. The mpg is slowly creeping up as filled up and reset the trip the other day

Hi Dave,

I reckon that unless 'you' really need the extra power/torque, the 80 bhp engine is the one to have, the injectors are more plentiful and cheaper. Same with the turbo I think, just a standard wastegate rather than VNT.

I had an 05 Modus with the 86bhp 1.5 dci engine. The car returned great MPG with all forms of driving and it was only £30 to tax. ;-)
Watch out while opening the front doors though in the wind, as the door design is S"£t and it is possible to bend the door as there are no door stops. :-(
Whilst we liked the car for its cabin design and well thought out odds and ends, it is a fairly fragile car. Rattles behind the dash and poor tyre wear which I never sorted were a massive frustration!

Howie

Luckily I only do 7-8000 miles a year max and I'm retiring in September so that should drop. When I bought it, there was a mega rattle up front and I found a loose plastic trim under the nosecone that clipped back into place with a bit of a fiddle. However it has another rattle now which seems to appear when applying a bit of throttle from low revs. It sounds almost like a rattling exhaust although that feels fairly secure. The tappets sound noisy but I'm going to do the oil and filter soon which looks old so hopefully will help. Does anyone know if there is a filter in the turbo oil feed? I'm a bit wary as it blew twice on the Berlingo courtesy of the dealer bodging it twice.

Generally the driving experience is quite pleasant, there's enough power when needed, the interior is comfy and suspension seems ok. I'm sure with a bit of preventative it will be ok.
Steve it's nice to know your motor did 200k plus as I really need to keep this going.

I'm quite enjoying driving the Modus. It's excellent on fuel, hovering around 54mpg which considering I spend most of my time sitting in heavy traffic is quite amazing. It has the mommy and daddy of a rattle which I have failed to find so far and am wondering if it's a badly fitted exhaust as it has that boomy sound to it. I have started changing the droplinks which is a pig of a job. The top is a doddle but the bottom is near enough non accessible. I ended up getting a grinder to the offside one and haven't tackled the nearside yet. Oil and filter will be next and then definitely cambelt and waterpump at the end of the month.

I don't think the 1.5 dci sludges up like PSA's 1.6 hdi. Turbo's do let go on Renault DCI engines of course. Whether that is down to filter in line,or poor maintenance, I don't know. The practicality and room inside these Modus/Scenic is only offset when you spanner them. They are like the guts of a horse, rammed into the carcass of a bunny rabbit!

Yuk! Haha. Talking of the turbo, is there a filter in the feed pipe? Don't want to go through that again or I might just use me bus pass instead.
