Scenic jerking

Hello All
Has anyone come across the following problem on a Scenic 1.6?
It starts fine but driving in second or third gear is difficult as it jerks violently, especially when attempting to accelerate. Easing off the accelerator usually brings it under control again. It initially felt like a misfiring problem and the garage cleaned and regapped the plugs and suggested replacing the HT leads, which I have done but the problem remains. Definately there is a loss of engine power
Usually in 4th & 5th at speed it runs fine.
Any comments gratefull received.

Now been into a main dealer after the engine managemt warning light came on. They identified a problem with the emission control system and found a split in a small rubber tube running across the rear of the engine. Now replaced and running fine. On the downside, they also found mayonaise in the coolant and have quoted £628 to fit a new head gasket. Common problem on the 1.6 engine, apparently....
