2001 2.0L F4R auxbelt failure due to faulty belt routing?

Post by Axa »

The belt have come of our car for the third time. This time after just 10months. The polishing on the pulleys shows it's been going in the right grooves. But I've heard its possible to rout the belt on the wrong side of one of the pulleys, changing the angle in witch the tensioner works against the belt, giving it not enough momentum to sufficiently tension the belt.
My question is if there exist any forum discussions or other documentation covering this plausible cause or failure?
I need as good documentation as possible because I have to go to court against the garage, to try to force them to take full responsibility (they have suggested 50%) for not been able to solve the cause of failures. And for forcing our family of 6 to borrow, and finally buy a third car.

Time for an update. We are now waiting for an response to a letter our lawyer have sent to the garage.
I have got great help from http://www.litens.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to check alternative routing possibility by measure using CAD program. Appears that the belt will not have enough tension to function at all he routed in the wrong way.
It would be very helpfully if someon with experience of this issue on the F4R engine could confirmed this?

Best regards, Gunnar

Could anyone help me with macro picture of the wear-marks / polishing on the flat mulitbelt idler-pulley.
The wearing on the pulley on my F4R indicates that the belt have been mounted and run with the ribbed side against the pulley. But the pulley are also polished in a wider way then the ribs should do.

I don't think you will find a member of FCF with that engine on here.
I also think that naming and shaming garages and involving forums is a risky business.
Many forums do not approve of it for reasons of litigation.

Why not? The 2,0L 16V (F4R ) is not at all an unusual engine.
I have now removed the name of the garage. But anyone is free to contact me if hes interested to know what garage NOT to trust in Norway.

Time for an update.
Polishing marks have been found on the rim of the oilsump and fasteningbolt, that indicates that the belt have been routed and going the wrong way around under the waterpump.
This progress came thanks to this emminent post _ http://www.espace-freunde.net/forum/ind ... #msg_num_9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanx again Roadrunner80 for posting exelent drawings! "I picture says more then a 1000 words".. =D>
Somehow its not possible to upload any photos here, but they are included in the thread in the link above for anyone interested in how to avoid this mess!
I have tried to explain how I think a few different unlucky and clumsy/ neglecting circumstances have made this possible to happen on our engine several times.
With this knowledge it should be easy for anyone to check that the belt are running in the right pattern and on the outer grooves.
I will however anyway let the garage fit an additional cover behind the drive-pulley that covers the gap in the timing-belt, cover in case the belt should ever derail again. http://www.espace-freunde.net/forum/index.php/fa/56466/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
