Wrong section Paul, this is Citroen not Renault section. :-D I do know about the Renault problem though because my friend is a Renault garage specialist. Two common problems with Scenics, electric handbrake and digital dash failures, both are subject to Renault recalls and they offer approx 80% of the costs towards the repairs in most cases. Get in touch with Renault UK customer relations and see what they offer.

Can you provide more details? Is there a warning on the instrument panel, if so what does it say? Can you hear any 'action' at all when engaging or dis engaging the parking brake?

I'd say there's two possibilities, either the main cable has snapped or it's become unhooked from the centre slider - that is what happened to my 04 plate. Unfortunately it's a tail up in the air on ramps kind of job.

I'm afraid it's a take it apart job. To get to mine it went like this. Put rear on ramps and chock wheels. Remove shield on 'axle', disconnect cables from the calipers, unthread cables, unbolt ecu/control unit and disconnect from the loom, jack up body of car slightly so that you can slide the 'centre mechanism' out to one side and remove it's plastic cover. If the main bowden cable from the ECU/control unit has come unhooked you're in luck if not then the chances are the main bowden cable has snapped in which case it's either a mortgage and take to Renault or see if a specialist can replace the bowden cable or scour the scrap yards. Chances are a Clip session or such will be needed to clear fault codes. Out of interest are the caliper springs still fitted?

could a totally dead battery of caused this fault? or someone pulling the emergency hand brake release?

It sounds as though your only choices are a replacement unit or see what speedycables can do for you.

There is a yellow handle under the floor as a release. You need to get the car on Clip tbh, as the fault could be many things.
The cable & ECU part is not repairable, neither can you fit used, as it has the vin number coded in.
To my knowledge you can only fit a new virgin unit, (we replace loads).
You need to verify the fault 1st, and clip is the only way.

if the yellow handle has been pulled would that stop the hand brake coming on until it has been reset?
and yes you can put second hand part on as long as you get the right one
ie: automatic for auto and manual for clutch, it only needs programming for a virgin unit
