Bought Renault 19 for a Rally

Post by Diabolical »

Friend and I have just 19 8 valve convertible to do Scally Rally Europe in.

440000 mile new head gasket and timing belt drives really well.

Any advice on what we should look for common faults etc to look for before we use it would be most grateful.

David

This is just my opinion and I know that people will disagree. I detest these rallies. This is a good example of why. A 44000 mile Renault 19 convertible being ruined. These rallies have deprived so many cars of futures as cherished classics. If I am wrong, and you are going to bring this car back and keep it in good condition then great, I apologise. I suspect that this will be the end of this low mileage 19 though.

And just wait 'til you see it's new paintjob! Not!!

In these rallies aren't thte cars auctioned off or are they expected to get
back to the UK to get weighed in?

I'm doing the Irish one this summer. Basically, you have to do a good deed as part of the challenge, some choose to weigh the car in and donate the money to charity - most cars end up being kept and cherished though!

yeah and then you upset volvo fans

I will be doing the Irish one next year with my brother i think, at the end of the day its some old dog of a car, if its £100 then it is below scrap price.
Why do people have to moan so much about old cars being scrapped or rallied.

If they all live then they would just be an old car that no one wants or cares about, they all have to die to achieve greatness and ultimatly be saved.
Thankfully it seems David understands this car life cycle and is in fact not killing one rusty old pup but is immortalising the bos that was the Renault 19, so think yourselfs lucky Renault lovers.

They dont really suffer with anything major i dont think.
If it were me i would throw new plugs/filters and fluids at it, check the cam belt/tensioners and carefully feel all rad hoses for soft spots but other than that she should be good, cross your fingers and gooooooooo!

did you do this rally yet David?

A guy at work was going to do the Tashket? rally this year but has postponed till next.. I suggested an old Xant on WVO - at least that is what I would use..

anyway, looks like there was a mileage mis communication in the original post, is the 19 440,000 or 44,000?

John
