Clio clutch problem?

Post by clin95 » 30 Sep 2002, 19:00

I have a 1993 Clio. The problem I am experiencing at the mo is that especially when it has been raining there is a tremendous squeaking noise, presumably coming from the clutch as it might (or might not) stop when changing gear or depressing the clutch pedal. It does not make the noise all the time, but it does seem to be prevalent when it is or has been raining. I would be grateful if anyone can offer me some advice as to what the problem might be.
Thanks for any help.

I don't wish to state the obvious, but, could it be the noise you are hearing is the fan belt? It squeaks (slips) at higher revs, and when you change gear the engine speed drops momentarilly, and the squeal stops for an instant, before resuming on taking up drive. Not a possibility to be overlooked. It would be worse in wet conditions because of the addition of water as a lubricant, exaggerating the problem. The solution , check the tension of the belt, or better still have the belt changed. (The slipping will have polished the surface of the belt, and it will be prone to squealing/slipping from now on.) If this is way out of the ball park, please disregard.

Thanks for the replies. I am pretty certain it is not the fan belt. It is now clear that the noise can come on while the vehicle is stationery. For some reason it seems to be mostly at night when the noise comes on. Probably due to dampness in the air, but I'm not really sure why. The thing is it doesn't do it every night. I suspect now that it might be something to do with the gearbox and not the clutch.
If anyone can offer any further info on what might be the problem I would be grateful.
Thanks again.

If it happens when the car is stationary, does it happen only with the clutch pedal depressed? If not I too would recommend a look at the poly-v "fan" belt!
Good luck

"For some reason it seems to be mostly at night when the noise comes on",
Hmm, strikes me this is the alternator drive belt sqeeling, headlight's place a heavy load on the alternator and is more than likely why it mostly occurs at night, its very common for alternator loading to cause belt slip if the belt is not tight enough or is worn.
Also if there is power steering and is driven by the same belt the load on it is even higher.
Switch everything electrical on, especially items requiring heavy current like heated rear screen, heater motor and headlights, then rev the engine in short bursts, see if it squeels, then turn everything off and see if it still does it as you rev the engine.
