I have a Renault Laguna 2.2 diesel 1996 (N) I had the gearbox replaced in Aug 1988, it just fell into a 1000 pieces. I have just had the same thing happen again, gutted to say the least!!!
Has anybody else had similar trouble, every recon gearbox guy I speak to tells me it's very very common in this model & year Laguna
and as you can imagine Gearboxes are like "rocking horse do do" to get hold of.
I would be most greatful if anybody knew the whereabouts of a 2.2 Diesel box, and im very keen to talk to anyone with gearbox trouble.
I was even thinking of buying a new Laguna next year (this is a wonderful car otherwise).

Hi Marie,
I've not heard of this problem.
Best people to help with either another gearbox or some advise are a company called BSD in London, an independent Renault specialist.
They can be contacted on 0207 241 1166 (phone) 0207 241 2000 fax.

I have a suspect gearbox at present in my 1997 Laguna 2.0S RXE Estate - whines in fifth when it has warmed up and on long journeys it pops out of gear under load occasionally.
The whine has doubled in volume over the last month or so and is very noticeable from outside the car as it drives past...
Shame because otherwise the car is superb and drives like new even with 111000 miles on it.

I had a similar type of noise in a CX Citroen a few years ago. It turned out that the guy who had done a service on the car had drained the transmission fluid & forgot to refill it. (Which was about when I decided I'd better make the time to do my own servicing)
In more recent times, there have been 3 cars bought by our family and all were well down on transmission fluid (in one case 300 ml instead of 2 litres) with none showing any signs of leaks.
I'd suggest you check the oil level in the transmission. Also, whilst I won't even think about additives in any cars engine, I am a strong believer in having them in the gearbox. Most of them will partially or totally remove most whining noises associated with transmissions & make the car easier to live with. I use a "Nulon" transmission additive, but as I'm in Australia, I don't know if it is available where you are. No doubts similar products of other brands (Redline) would do the same job.
