Have a look at my installing front and rear dash cam guide Elis. I had a bit of trial and error getting one that would switch on with the ignition/ engine and off again.
I ended up using F4 for the auto box electrochrome mirrors and diesel heater, a 10A which was ok for my needs.

Very interesting Marc,

A few questions spring to mind:

1. What is the rating of the optional JBL amplifier, and where is it powered from? - can I just abstract power from the intended location?
2. Is there a hefty +12V from the battery leading to the fusebox in the glovebox in case I need to tap the +12V myself

also:
Do you have any juicy footage captured o your dashcam :P
Can the electrochrome side mirror glass be retro-fitted, the rear view mirror works a treat but I still get swines in range rovers sitting in my blind spot blasting me with their xenons!

PS: curiosity got the better of me, I got lexia out and went to the car.

"Systeme Hi-Fi Analogique" appears to be the same volume as "Standard"
"System Hi-Fi Numerique" was deafening even at volume 1! - Seriously loud!

Not sure what is going on but unfortunately it looks like the RD45 cannot output line level audio :(

I'll have a look at some diagrams tomorrow Ellis, I'll try and dig up some diagrams for how the original hi-fi amp was wired into the system and I'll get back to you.

That would be great, thanks.

it shows that pin 11 of an RD4 can be used to trigger an amp turn on... maybe the RD45 is the same?

Thanks Marc, can't stress enough how useful that email is!

from looking at the diagram there seems to only be four audio connections between the Radio and the Amplifier, the four audio channels +ve, no negative connections between the Amp and Radio.. odd ....Some diagrams I've seen show 8 connections between the Amp and Radio (presumable 4 channels +ve and -ve)

Also, Z91D must be the trigger cable for the amp, it seems to be triggered by the BSI.

Its promising that the radio is directly connected to the AMP in the stock config and the audio isn't delivered trough the CAN or some other digital medium.

I'd love to know what the lexia config of an Amplifier connected radio would be with regards to the output setting.... It may explain my odd result last night when changing between "hi-fi Analogique" and "hi-fi Numerique" Maybe the "analogique" uses an 8 wire Headunit to Amp config and the "numerique" uses only 4 ?

Also I should be ok running a wire from fuse G39 as it’s rated for 40A

So, got a bit twitchy on ebay and bought an amp...

A JBL GT5-A604, so similar to that other one but about half the price.... It seems a touch bigger though.

4 x 60W should be plenty though :-D

Image

I've been to the car to scope out a place for it to sit and the only discrete place I can see is inside the boot storage pockets (right and left)

Image

If you remove the lining there is a nice big cavity in which I can hide the amp.

Ideally I want to find the flush cover instead of the deep cover.... Am I right in thinking the V6 C5's had the battery in this cavity and would have had a flush cover over the cavity?

Something like this: (number 11)

Currently I have the storage box (number 4)

Image

Searching for the part numbers hasn't turned up anything useful yet, It might be a hard part to track down :( But I want it all hidden away and as OEM-like as possible.

The official sub that comes with the Philips HiFi option is this:
Woofer.PNG
It would go in the rear right compartment.

As for the left - that panel is not easily sourced second hand as it would only of been fitted on models with the CD changer / HiFi Amp (there were 2 locations it was fitted depending on other options - boot or glovebox)

So that part 11 you have your eye on is an eye watering £57. Ex. or £68.48 Inc. VAT new!

Yeah, this isn't going to be a easy mod... I think I might have more luck looking for cars being broken on eBay and hope there's a suitable donor. I can't believe that's nearly £70 for a flap of felt!

The amp is definitely going in one of those cavities though, are there any easy ways of getting 2 x 10core cables + a 4mm^2 power cable to the passenger glove compartment area?

Not too bad - I ran cables for my rear windscreen camera through to the front camera easily enough. What you don't want to do is run any cables up under the headlining though for 2 reasons:
1) Flappy cables banging about the roof would be worse torture than watching an episode of Coronation Street - almost.
2) More importantly, the curtain / side airbags are deployed along the length of the passenger compartment - the force of it triggering on a stray wire would turn it into cheese wire.

I went under the carpet - near the doors - there is plenty of room to tuck away under the carpet floor plastic trim panels through into the front - and up and into the fuse box area (see my dash cam photos). Take the end trim panel off the front passenger dashboard end and it is easier to get into the area to receive the wiring. It shouldn't be any more complicated to get from the boot area into the rear passenger floor and you are away.

1: I'm with you there re coronation street  , especially as the cables would be bulky and obvious in the roof lining.
2: yeah, no intention of being garotted by a diy wire install.

Yeah I'll use your route of cabling as it seems simplest.

next job is to get hold of some multicore and 4mm^2 ...... oh and a quadlock extension to butcher haha 8-)

Just an update:

The amplifier has arrived today, First thing i did was remove those garish silver trim pieces.

Image

Much better. Even though it's going to be installed completely out of sight I want it to look as stock as possible.

I've had a quick look inside too:

Image

The board looks to be good quality, really beefy connectors, good filtering components etc.

MOSFETs for the inverter are a no-name brand but seem to have decent spec. Datasheet if anyone is interested https://4donline.ihs.com/images/VipMast ... 43A3159BB0

The Transistors:

Image

Image

3 matching pairs however there is an odd transistor.... maybe its been replaced before?

Either way, I'm going to upgrade the MOSFETs and transistors once I've got it all working. Seems daft to have a solid board then save money on the actual amplification components :o

Unfortunately I don't have a battery in the house to try it so my neighbors can sleep well :-D

Yep, connect the white one in and set the option of aerial no 2 as 'passive' as that unit is the single tuner one. But you must leave setting aerial No 1 as 'Active'. This is the only value that must be entered here.

I have similar problem with my RD45 (single tuner, only white socket). The radio quality on single aerial is really poor. Do you believe that I can connect grey (powered) antena to white socket in the radio? On my radio setting I have options sut you like you mentioned (1 aerial active, 2nd aerial passive).

If you have the single tuner variant, then in Diagbox, under the Antenna Configuration, you should code the following:
Number of Aerials: Code as "1" For Single Tuner Models.
Type of Aerial No 1: Code as "Active Aerial" For Single Tuner Models.
Type of Aerial No 2: Code as "Passive Aerial" For Single Tuner Models.

I have coded like you mentioned but signal is poor while on previous radio with two tuners signal was "crystal". Is there any hope? :)
