If you wish to use the top of the dash to fit a screen (aka Sat Nav original fitting) then you will need a new dash or have to cut a lot...it looks like a swap job for the larger "cover" but it is not.

The fitted RD unit is not double din and is very low for a Sat Nav screen....maybe a pop out/up screen in the top 2/3rds and a 1/2 din pop out cup holder below (like AUDI). A pop-out/up screen will block the center vents however

You will loose controls (matched on the stalks) for the cars setting via the Radio front panel.

(Keep the original so you can reinstate the controls if needed, like a comms unit failure on the steering wheel (not uncommon)

Im trying to find out what will i lose. Im thinking of installing a Alpine head unit instead of the RD sat nav unit. I have the stalk adapter and it works with the little orange display in my Hatchback at the moment. The exclusive estate i'm thinking of getting has the sat nav as standard. So if i replace the RD with the Alpine and keep the big display what will i lose ie what will not display.

Yes, but the car in question is a 2nd gen C5, not the third one ...

The larger satnav screen is used for much more than just satnav. It displays lots of warnings and also the various graphics for the front and rear parking sensors fitted in exclusives.

I think if you change the radio unit the screen will stop working completely.

Is there some reason why you'd want to change it?

I need to change the headunit as the original one will not cut it.The reason is, i enter sound competitions and an after market ie Alpine H/U gives me so much more.I have the MK 2 VTR and have fitted one to this and still keeping the little orange display ie mpg, trip, can go into the menu and turn off/on everything. The estate i'm thinking of getting has the sat nav big display as standard. So if i replace the RD sat nav with the Alpine, and keep the big display what will i lose ie what will not display.

Well, for starters you will lose all sat nav stuff as the sattnav needs the map disc permanently in the single CD slot to work. One of the reasons why exclusives with sattnav have a CD multi changer under the drivers seat.

As for other stuff, it might be that you will have to try it and see as I doubt you will find anyone who has done exactly what you are thinking of.

Vborovic might have some tips as he has done a lot of sat nav and ICE stuff although I think he has a newer X7 variant.

As said, it cannot be done without loosing the screen display. The 200-2006 SatNav is crud now anyway....no post code searches etc.

The only way is to rip it all out and use the space in the dash for another screen/system....you then loose all controls except from the stalk buttons.

Edit:...You could try modding the Aux inputs by increasing input levels (need a small line increase amp which is available) and add in a speaker side amp. Add a remote Bluetooth and run a MP3 player off that as a direct feed to the Aux line.Change speakers.

Ok - Here's another site that is UK based offering a similar system for the C5 - Never used them as I have the NG4 Navidrive 3d already in my X7 - but I would suggest you speak to the guy regarding their Head Unit and will it allow you to access the car menus / settings / configuration that is currently controlled by the exiting Head Unit. :-D Not cheap, but a LOT cheaper than trying to retrofit an NG4 system (if possible, given the additional kit with it).
