2010 C5 Bluetooth question

Post by Aidenk777 »

Morning all - first question from a new member.

I’m picking up a 2010 C5 VTR in a week and had a question about potential Bluetooth compatibility. I’ve had a read through a lot of threads and I’m just getting more and more confused.

The car is just a VTR, so no satnav or colour screen.

My questions - what head unit comes in my car? From pictures it could either be an RD4 or RD45 (which I know has BT), but they look identical.

If it is an RD4, is it a simple process to swap out to an RD45? I’m fairly handy with car audio and have no problem in pulling the HU out. I’ve also seen a connects2 device that offers BT support by plugging into the autochanger port.

Any help is most appreciated. In my last car (2008 Polo) I simply swapped out the factory HU for a Kenwood double din which solved all the issues in one go! I know with a newer car this may not be a route to go.

Thanks again :)

Post up your VIN and I'll be able to tell you what you do and do not have. You may not need a new screen depending on the one fitted.

I did not know the screen could be used on both in some cases, that is good news for some.

Can you post a link to and the "contact" used in China ?

Thanks for the replies so far. I’ve not yet picked up the car, however I do know the registration number if that’s any help. SM60YVW.

I’m starting the think the Connects2 module may be a more economical way of sorting the BT issue.

It depends on the model and build Alasdair as to whether the EMF 'C' screen is already fitted as standard.

Also be aware that the connects 2 system will only provide basic functionality for Bluetooth - as it only mimics the CD changer port (as if there was a 5 CD Changer fitted. As such it will play tracks from 6 folders. You will not get any MP3 information or test displayed like song titles or tracks. Just basic playability. The RD4 can be control a Citroen Hands Free Kit (if specified as an option) to handle bluetooth calls - but no Bluetooth Audio Streaming.

The RD45 system has built in Bluetooth and supports Audio Streaming and Bluetooth Phone functions as well as being able to read MP3 files from a USB stick and connection of an Apple Device via USB (depending on options)

Ok, so this is a poverty spec. C5. It is a C5 (X7) 5 DOOR ESTATE 1.6 HDi 110 particle emission filter (DV6TED4) Manual gearbox 5. It has metallic suspension, not Hydractive (in case that was important to you).

It has a bog standard RD4 head unit that plays CDs and MP3 CDs. It does not have a USB socket in the front arm rest and does not have the hands free kit, nor any Auxiliary Audio input. It only has Mono-zone Air conditioning, non-electrochrome interior mirrors, no parking assistance, no Tyre Pressure Monitoring, no spare wheel (uses the bursting bomb canister).

The tailgate is not motorised either on this trim level, there is no rain or brightness sensor - so no auto lights and no auto wipers.

So although this will be economical, it is bog standard spec. Anything else you need, let me know.

Thank you for that, I have done some research before I bought the car, so I know it’s boggo spec. It’s not a big thing for me, I’ve got it because it’s big and cheap. My current car is a VW Polo which is pretty spartan, so even a pov spec C5 is an upgrade. Depending on how I get on with this, I may get a better spec C5 in the future.

Oddly enough it does have a spare wheel and toolkit, and the can of tyre weld too.

In regards to the car stereo, it’s looking like an RD45 would be a useful upgrade, will I have to purchase another screen?

Thanks again for the info, it’s really helpful.

Of course it would of helped if I answered the original question :rofl2:

Sod's law - according to the VIN it would have had one of 2 monochrome screens - they actually list 2 screens against your vehicle.

Part: 6593H7 - Level 'C' Monochrome Screen
Part: 6593T8 - EMF C

So on the face of it, you probably do need to change the screen for a EMF C version if you are going for the RD45 Upgrade. Secondly, although you have the microphone installed in the central roof console, it is connected to a flat ribbon cable that is routed to a connector in the front tweeters and from there disappears into oblivion. Others who have completed this upgrade have had to resort to creating their own wiring from the microphone plug, routing it through the A Pillar and through into the dash and then wiring it directly into the back of the Quad Lock connector pins.

So there is a little work to do - An RD45 to source, plus an EMF 'C' Screen, plus some wiring connections and then the RD45 will need configuring to the vehicle and some options setting to reflect the options in the car.

Thanks again, this does not look like a simple process!

I’ve spotted a HU and screen combo on eBay, would this be what I’m after?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 3425121295

Given the low spec of my car, I’m tempted to buy a Kenwood/Alpine single din HU, though I’m not sure what I’d lose from the factory display. Thoughts?

Ok, that will do it - they are supplying the kit - so just the microphone wiring to do (but I would just see if it works first when connected before you do anything).

As for an aftermarket - forget it, not recommended. These Head Units along with the display are computer units that interface with the car and provide access to some of the vehicle functions and options. You will lose access to the configuration menu, time and date settings, equipment option settings, and an aftermarket head radio will need a special harness or it will interfere with the vehicle's electrical network and cause issues with the central locking and another anomalies. Just about everyone I know who has upgraded, has done so with another factory fitted option RD4 to RD45, or to MyWay, or to RT4 or RT6 etc. This avoids all the issues I described.

That’s perfect, thanks for all the advice. Noted about the aftermarket HU, I’ll give that a miss.

All this for a bit of Bluetooth streaming!
