Have you tried rebooting the system with the latest firmware in the USB socket?

Hi Mark

Yeah sure. I tried to load the last firmware, also previous, in FAT32, with USB pen, SD and DVD (the latter has eaten it and no longer ejects)

I have tried the eject+VOLUME button for 30 seconds, pressing 1+2+3, 1+3+5 methods, and there have been no results either.

And what about the image of the HD I do not have it very sure either, but I can not think of anything else.

Thanks for your answer.

Ok, to be honest, I think your problems will be related to the software on the chip that has become corrupt and the way to recover the unit is to re-write the factory code. That is something that would have to be done by an authorised repairer or somebody with a a specific Head Unit programming tool and the Harman Becker NG4 code with which to programme it.

I think it has something to do with gaps in the data blocks and this starts to cause the unit to constantly restart until it gets to the point where it won't restart anymore. A hard drive image won't help you in this case as it still needs the basic code in the chip to boot and if this is corrupt it won't make any difference.

There are some companies that provide the software for a fee, then you need the hardware and usually an activation for each system - so becomes very expensive to do unless you are buying these tools for a business.

I see you are in Spain, why not give the following people a ring and see if they can help with reflashing the unit:

One other thing, try holding the 'on' button shown in yellow in the picture for a minimum of 15 seconds to cause a reboot.

Yes, it's what I fear, data has been corrupted. About 3 or 4 months ago it did the same, but after 2 or 3 days recovered and started working again, but this time it hasn't done it.

I have phoned autotronics as you recommend and I am going to send the device to them so they can try to fix it.

The 'on' button trick also tried it and it didn't work either. I think I read all the forums around the world about the NG4 (blessed google translator :-) ) and tried all possible combinations, but there was nothing to do.

Thanks for the help, and I will keep you informed.

Yes please do. I’ve not use Autronics, but as they appear to be in Spain, thought I’d mention them.

The officially approved repairer for PSA Head units is Clarion, so it may be looking for their Spanish HQ and giving them a call too. Best of luck, and do let us know how you get on.

@GiveMeABreak : bad news, the reboots are back, even with the CF card ... did you try to mount the NG4 image and check logs of the OS inside to see if there is any explanations for the reboot ?

All you need to do is extract the latest firmware onto the USB and allow that to install again. That should recreate all the partitions again. If you had any glitches previously on the hard drive they will of been copied over when you cloned it.

The firmware will create everything from scratch again. Don’t forget you will get the error half way through the firmware install, just leave the USB in and allow it to restart and it will carry on.

That can happen as I said, that when cloning the drive you can clone any errors or faults that are on the drive.

If the above doesn’t sort it, then just delete the partitions on the CF card in Windows and format it. Then put it back in the NG4 and boot with the firmware USB in. It should set everything up from scratch. You will of course lose any settings, saved navigation entries or music, but you can always create them again. Keep at it, you should get there it just takes time. Also keep the engine running during update so as not to interrupt the process.

I gave a try with the 4 DVD I had with the car and the CF wiped out of it filesystem... First it is amazingly slow, I got punished for my laziness, I did not wanted to spent 5 min looking for a USB while the FW was downloading, will never do it again from DVD !

My NG4 finally accept to start the upgrade, but it never finished properly, after the error+reboot the installation do not resume but start again from scratch ... hopefully It did not brick my NG4. BTW I did had a look at the CF content after the aborted upgrade and no file system were created at all. Next attempt will be from the USB key.

Yes, the firmware is really essential from USB as the DVD takes forever.

But make sure you have the latest firmware 42.03 (N42c), as the one on your DVD will likely be older! If you need this firmware, let me know and I can provide a link to the file. The firmware will recreate the system even if a blank hard drive was installed, so will do the same on a CF card, but make sure it is not later than UDMA 6 - UDMA 7 and later will cause problems as the command set is not fully supported by this version of the QNX operating system used on the NG4.

You will always get the error coming up during the installation - but DO NOT REMOVE the USB stick. Leave it in and when it restarts it will tell you it has detected the firmware and ask to update = just go ahead - it will not start from scratch, but does continue on from where it left off (even thought is doesn't seem like it).

well, I did check on internet but I do have the latest firmware n42c on DVD, plus the 3 DVDs for the maps and alerting. looks like the previous owner spend the money to get the official things from Citroen. if it works on your CF it will be ok on mine ... I even succeed to get the same card you shown on the picture ! :-D

Re: Guide to Replacing the NG4 Navidrive 3D Hard Drive with a CF Card

So I did a try without the disk as the firmware is loaded in the NG4 memory and I encountered again a reboot (I have only radio but this is fine for testing).

So YES refreshing the firware is the way to go, but it does not seems to be linked to the disk or CF. I am convinced now that my disk wasn't dead as I have the same symptoms without it. I am worried that my NG4 is in a state where it will encounter this bug with firmware N42C whatever I do.... a kind of endless loop ???

Maybe I coud try with an older firmware, but downgrading a firmware is not always supported. I will try to reload the firmware (again) AFTER doing a factory reset of the NG4, just in case the bug is triggered by one of my settings, AND with the original hard drive properly wiped out as you said, so I am with a 100% compliant hardware.
EDIT :
After a low level format and disk test, I just tested with the HDD, same behavior (a men's dream, spending my evening in my car for Valentine's day) :
- update starting
- update running up to 67%
- last filles updated : efs_SSS.efs / EE1000066A6.bin / <TooFast4MeToWriteIt.Down>
- restart
- internal error 0x3019
Then back to update starting ... I let it run twice and aborted the update the third time. (same issue I had with the CF)

After the aborted update I checked the HDD and no partirtions were getting created. I really doubt the FW update is doing anything. During the update no restart of the NG4 even with its legacy HDD so for me it looks like a disk issue but it is not.

Maybe there is a Clear CMOS in the NG4 somewhere ?

Does somebody here have a N42b firmware ? I am almost sure it won't downgrade but I am ready to give a try anyway (too old, no success to find it on the web)

Pic of the CF... same as yours UDMA6 64GB KomputerBay ... all should be fine as it works for you, but no :-s

Hi,

Bad news for me. I sent my NG4 unit to autotronics in Spain but they couldn't repair it. At last I bought a NG4 from a broken car.

Thanks anyway for your help.
