NG4 Navidrive 3D 7 Digit Postcode Issues

Post by GiveMeABreak » 16 Nov 2015, 16:08

I've spent some considerable time hunting the net and various Forums (or Fora!) for some definitive info on getting the NG4 Navidrive 3D system to accept 7 digit Postcodes.
This is the system in question in my C5 X7, but there is a similar one installed in some Peugeot vehicles ...

Image

I got in contact with 'Here' maps, formerly Navteq, who make the maps for many of the automotive companies including the PSA group. Here is an extract ..
I have a question concerning the Citroen C5 NG4 Navidrive 3D maps / firmware concerning Postcodes. I already have the latest firmware and 2015-1 map update and was very disappointed to find that we are STILL unable to use 7 digit postcode mapping in the UK for this system. Peugeot / Citroen systems with the RT6 system and firmware 2.80+ with the latest maps can now enjoy 7 digit postcode mapping - which should be the norm. As you supply the firmware along with the maps for the NG4 Navidrive 3D system, I would like to know when we can expect this same functionality? Presently in many rural areas, the 5 digit system is hopeless as 5 digits are not specific enough especially if you do not have the lane or street names making it very difficult to navigate.

The bog standard response was:
Dear Customer,
Thank you for your enquiry.
HERE Maps are used in many of the navigation systems on the market. The navigation system function you mention is a function of the navigation system software supplied with the hardware and is not a function of the map data. Please note that each automobile manufacturer has made choices on the functionality that they wish the navigation system to support. We kindly recommend you to contact your dealer about this issue.

To which my response was:
Thank you for your prompt response to my query.
I have indeed already been in touch with Citroen UK and am awaiting a further response. Can I therefore assume that the data contained in Here maps does contain UK 7 digit postcode data?
I am aware that the RT6 System fitted in some PSA vehicles as of firmware 2.80 does support 7 digit post codes, so would assume so – but I would like clarification for the maps supplied for the NG4 Navidrive 3D system please, so I can confirm this with Citroen UK should this matter arise.

This was the answer:
Thank you for inquiring about HERE Maps.
Only the RT6 and the Touchscreen systems support the full UK postal codes when the software is above version 2.80. All other systems do not support this function. Should you require additional information, please send us your feedback by replying to this email .
With kind regards,
HERE Customer Service
PO Box 501

THE NETHERLANDS

I won't list the correspondence I've had back and forward with Citroen UK Customer Services here, suffice it to say that I'm waiting a further response other than "...have a chat with your local dealer..."

So there seems to be a lot of batting back and forward between the the mapping company and PSA. It is my understanding that apart from the UK, only Japan used 7 digits for their postcodes and as this system has been replaced now, I think it unlikely they will provide a system firmware / software update to correct this, so it looks like we are stuck with 5 digit search at present. We know it can be done as per other systems, and should of been a standard function from new, so I'm not holding my breath on this!
Such a shame as the system is brilliant in so many other regards:- Bluetooth (including SIRI through the audio system if you have an iPhone), Plays DVD Movies, MP3, WMA files, Voice Commands, Hard Drive for media / Jukebox Function, SD card support for Media, 3D mapping, Speed Camera Alerts, Internal GSM Phone with Text Messaging, SOS Emergency Assistance and Breakdown etc., but let down by the post code issue.

On another note, the latest version of the maps are out now for those interested (GPS Map 2015-2 Edition). I'll have the update in a few days and will post back if there is a new firmware update included as there was last time 8-)

Historically, PSA haven't used UK postcodes from 2000 and the introduction of satnav in the first C5 (I think) it definately wasn't available in RT3 or RT4, nor in MyWay (RT5). however, by putting in a partcial postcode you do get a list of streets.......

Kit comes with European maps on 2 DVDs, plus a firmware update (N42C) and the Speed Camera Database as of September 2015 at time of posting for about £140 (199 Euros).

Yes, I used to have the old Magneti Marelli Navidrive RT3 in my 2005 Exclusive and don't recall that having any postcode search facility in that. The Harman Becker NG4 system is a lot better in may respects - most noticeably in the voice synthesis. On the older RT3, if you had street name announcing enabled, the woman's voice sounded like Regan from 'The Exorcist' after a few dozen cans of Special Brew, 4 Mackesons and a seriously large joint ! But then again, it may be something to do with living in Wales....

But as I said in my post, where I am located in rural Wales, there there aren't always street names - the postcode will get you to an area, but then it's up to you to find it (and that's with normal 7 digit codes). So you can imagine with 5 digit mapping, it's even less accurate. That's another reason why I tell all the delivery companies not to rely on their Sat Navs when delivering as they always deliver to the wrong address! We also have lots of 'Don't rely on Sat Nav' signs everywhere!

Just get a tomTom, I had to as I deliver into some deep Devon lanes (etal), the TomTom at least gets you there or about.
You CAN get a post code Map book btw......they are very good.

Map co-ordinates for otherwise difficult to locate points?

Do you mean postcode to GPS coordinates? That would be really useful, especially if you dont have web access enroute! Do you have any details?

Nope, index is the post code, look it up and it gives you the page co-ordinates.
Then look for the road detail/near village and input that name.
Often the "local-lanes" are not shown on maps as they have a "local" name, again Post Code-2-map helps.

I used mine a lot in London, check the post code / map, Ok I know that, follow nose.
It is also very good for setting false way points to force a chosen direction of travel with a sat nav.

I have a big habit these days of asking for the postcode and number above all else. There is a wonderful logic to the system when you really use it with paper maps.

You could always use the postcode to GPS converter, something like this...... http://websemantics.co.uk/online_tools/ ... sion_tool/
