406 TD water in oil

Post by Paul 123 »

During the summer I wrote on this forum about my 406 TD (195k)that was losing water into the oil causing alot of mayonaising in the oil filler neck. Apart from this problem the car performed faultlessly. The general concensus at the time was that the head gasket had gone and so I have recently visited a couple of garages to let them have a look.
Both gagages were less than certain that it was the head gasket simply because there were no other symtoms (overheading, leaking oil, excessive pressure in the cooling system etc)despite 9k miles of driving. One has now suggested that there may be a leak from one of the waterways into the oil, either in the block itself or possibly from a crack within the head.
I guess my question is has anyone come across a problem like this before and are there any more checks I could do to determine more accurately exactly where I'm losing the water.
Lastly, and I hope is doesn't come to this, are the TD engines in the 306 and Xantia the same as my 406.
Many thanks for any help you can give.
