DJ5 fuel problem

Post by keveljay »

can any of you clever guys shed any light on my really frustrating problem? I have got a '95 Boxer with a 2446cc DJ5 engine. In the morning she'll start fine then stop after 100yards. If you pump the primer on the Rotodiesel lift pump there is whooshing and sloshing noise from the tank area as though there as an air lock or something. It seems that the fuel is being syphoned or drawn back into the tank overnight. To try and prove/disprove this i undid the filler cap when half-full and it sounded like a vacuum in the tank as the air rushed in. I tried leaving the fuel filler cap on loosely and although this helps slightly, the problem still remains. Its as though the pump is being 'sucked dry' overnight. The pump is a Bosch 0460 494 337.
Thanks in anticipation

Just a shot in the dark - but have you a fuel lift pump in the
tank, similar to HDI cars? If so, it may have failed.
