Pug 405 GLX 1.8 - Engine cutting out

Post by kingmob »

Can anyone offer me any advice.
Got a Pug 405 GLX 1.8. All of a sudden yesterday the engine cut out whils idling at traffic lights. It restarted fine but cuts out every time I slow down. I've had no problems starting it but if I even dab the accelerator and let go the engine stops.
Iding is sporadic, between 7500 and 12000 revs at best and the engine warning light pops up intermittently though not for any great length of time.
There is a squeaking noise coming from under the bonnet (though I cant place where) and it also appears there's an oil leak.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

more information is needed:
Is it carb or fuel injection? does it have a distributor or is it fully programmed electronic ignition?
I'm assuming the idle is actually 750 to 1200 (!)
does the engine still have full power when driving? have you checked for the obvious things such as fouled/overly wide plug gaps
does it splutter and then die, or just cut out instantly?
squeak: all the time, only sometimes, when slowing? accelerating?
and I doubt the oil leak is significant to this problem..

A 405 GLX 1.8 is gonna be multi point fuel injection, Unclip & remove the black cover ( 2 metal spring clips if there still there ) that covers the ECU & tell us what managment system is fitted.
The cover is in the right hand corner off the engine bay, behind the metal bulkhead & under the black slated grill that joins on the bottom of the screen.
