my mpg seems low any pointers

Post by caveman_si »

just been working out my mpg to see what im getting and it seems low.
works out to 31.46 mpg for the last 1400 ish miles
was using :
http://www.geocities.com/mpgcalc/ so i know i cant have messed up the calcs
car is a 405 td m reg, 185000 ish miles recent oil change (with in last 1000 miles). + airfilters
Any ideas if this seems ok or if there is somethings i need to look at??
Yes ive checked the tyres all correct psi, mixture of urban/ motorway 50/50 miles. and no idont drive like a loon, although i have had a couple of canoes on the roof for the last 400 miles. other then lack of mpg performance is ok
Any thing engine wise that might need looking at??
cheers in advance si

Have the injectors been replaced recently? Does it smoke at all?
If not, it might be worth sticking in a set of reconditioned injectors.
You could also get the injection pump timing checked.

Only smokes a bit on start up otherwise fine. NO idea about the injectors, the car has no service history, even tho its in fair good shape. Right another thing to add to my list off things that need to be "looked at". You do one job and 5 more pop up!!!!!!!!

Si,
31.5 mpg out of a 405 TD is abysmal - I would expect it to be nearer 45... MPG calc might not be right, how many litres and miles? As a ready reckoner 10 miles / litre is about 45 mpg - which is easy to do in your head at the pumps!
First thing to do is change the air and diesel filters, and see where that gets you.

Are the brakes binding on. The rear adjusters are prone to siezing on most peugoet's

fuel filter and air filter were both changed about 1900 miles ago, coolant was done 1700 miles ago, oil change done 1000 miles ago, front pipe on the exhuast was done then too, front discs and pads done about 900miles ago. NOt checked the to see the if the rear brakes are binding will try to do at the weekend
216.97 litre of fuel has gone into the car over 1553 mile and there is just over half a tank left!!!!!! doh just realised my mistake, if i take of say 40 litres for whats still in the tank it goes up to just over 39mpg from just under 32mpg still not great but better.

My L 405 TD will get somewhere between 500 and 600 miles from a tank, depending on how I drive it.
The MPG went up significantly after it's first service in my ownership, I went to 15w40 VW Approved synthetic from GSF ( approx £10/bottle ). The MPG went from about 38-40 to 45-55.
