205GLD 1990 - oh dear the problem is coming back

Post by chas smash »

Hello I posted on here at the begining of March about my 205D not idling right and cutting out. This was eventually fixed by replacing the Diesel pump and fuel pipes. The fuel filter was also changed. The diesel pressure to the injectors increased ie went from a trickle to spraying out when you losened the injectors off and all was well.
Now some 4 weeks later the problem is beginning to return and the engine is starting to stutter more and more. It has cut-out on two occasions. Any ideas?

It still sounds as though air is getting into the fuel lines. If using the hand primer allows the engine to restart, or prevents it from cutting out, then an air leak is your trouble.

It gets even worse the car limped home from a 25 mile journey from work last night.
When I pulled up at home a large pool of oil appeared underneath!
It started fine though but the oil appears to be dripping from uner the air filter plastic housing. I will investigate it fully this week-end but i think it could be terminal and time for a new motor.

If you are lucky enough to start the engine, take the oil dip stick out and put your finger over the hole.
If there is quite a lot of pressure it's coming from the crankcase which probably means it's getting past the rings. I think pressure of this sort may lead to oil blowing into the air filter case and leaking out thro' the bottom.
If I remember rightly you mentioned possiblity of dodgy rings in march. Lack of compression from such may also contribute to poor starting & running.

That's pretty much it. I think the rings may have worn so much now.
I think that may be it for me with this car.

I don't want to go down the road of fitting a second hand engine.
But if anyone would like to make me an offer for a 1990 H reg 205GLD MOT til Feb2005 112,000 miles. Drives well but in need of a little engine work. Please email at luton1885@hotmail.com.
The car is in Bedfordshire by the way.

Something else to consider. I don't know what breathing/vent pipes there are on your 205, I had a petrol Cavalier years ago which had an oil weep from filler cap in rocker cover. Local chap pulled out dip-stick - air blowing out. Immediately he took off a plate on the top of rocer cover which had a breather pipe to it. Looking at the underside of plate was a clogged gause. Burned this off, refitted it - no more pressure.
As I say, don't know what breathing pipes are on the 205, or if similar blocking would occur with diesel.

There is a couple of small breather pipe on the front of the engine to the cylinder head, these have been known to block up. Also the small pipes to the air cleaner could be blocked.
