106 xnd problems and garage costs?

Post by Tyke »

I have a Peugeot 106 xnd diesel 1527, M reg.
My wife was going to work when it just stopped and wouldent start at all.
Turned out that 3 wires had been damaged and had to be replaced along with the stop solenoid.....that cost £70.
It was ok for 2 days then it went belly up again and the ignition switch packed in and burnt the starter motor out.
Back to the garage and another bill for 220 quid for a new ignition switch a second hand starter motor and a new glo plug.
All was fine for 3 days but i did notice the battery light flickering so i rang the garage up and he said it could be the alternator thats faulty due to the strain on it with the starter motor burning out!.
Anyway the battery did go flat and i charged it up and all was ok but its obvious i need the alternator replacing now.
My query is this, can all this be related or is the garage pulling a fast one on me? and can a burnt out starter motor cause the alternator to go faulty too?
I just hope after fitting a recon alternator i have no more probs.
My bro in law is doing it on saturday as the garage bills have left me a bit skint.
Is the alternator easy to replace and is there anything i/he should know ie possible probs?, maybe its time to replace the car next year as its done 100679 miles .

Are you sure that the alternator is turning over correctly. Check that the belt is not slipping. It should be very tight.

Bit late is this update but it turned out to be a broken wire leading to the alternator.

So you're going to keep it now? 100K isn't a high mileage for diesel engines.

Yes John i am keeping it as its very economical to run.
And as you say for a diesel its not really high mileage.
The 306 we have is a bit of a petrol guzzler and i wish i had got another diesel.
Bit hard on the pocket running 2 cars but with me working a 12 hour system the wife needs a car too to ferry our. teenage daughters about.[;)]
