Whats the piece sponge for?
About to do my first service on my 308 (130/1.2 Puretech) - haven't pulled the car to bits yet so it might be obvious when I have - this is in anticipation...
Where does the piece of sponge fit? (or is it for mopping your brow after having to remove half the car to get the air filter in? )

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
It definitely seems part of the filter, so don't chuck it away just yet!

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
Looks like a pre-filter, though I've never seen one in the flesh.

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
I'd guess it's a pre-filter. The genuine air filters for the C5 X7 have 'sponge' bonded to the face of the filter material - this can help to extend the service life of the air filters as it filters out more coarse material. I'd suspect there's a place in the air filter housing for that sponge in your photo to fit.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
Maybe a manufacturing cock up and cheaper to produce a bit of foam than redo the housing

Something to damp an unwanted vibration??
Maybe someone could ask next time they go into a PSA service centre...

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
Sorry about the delay guys, got round to doing the service last weekend
Here it is in-situ
Removed
Comparison:
The car has obviously been serviced prior to me getting my hands on it so looking at how much the sponge is deformed, the fit of it and the shape of the new one, I'm not all that convinced that it's in the correct position in the first picture - I just don't know; I couldn't see anywhere obvious it would fit and needless to say I rammed this one back where the old one came out of!

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
Does it actually do anything in that hole, or just fill up a cavity? Would any air pass through it?

Re: Whats the piece sponge for?
Yes there's an outlet from the airbox that goes to some kind of electronically controlled valve/sensor on what I assume is the intercooler pipe:
