207 gear change issue

Post by doctle »

My 207 drives great and changes gears easily on the up change. Changing down is difficult car is stiff going into gear and is only easy to downchange at under 30 mph. My mechanic says it's fine and that 207 gearboxes are "notchy" I don't buy this. Has anyone encountered this problem. Would a change of gear oil help? Thanks guys

Not sure if it applies to yours but certainly earlier PSA boxes did very poorly on anything other than Total BV 75/80 - the synchro hubs would wear very rapidly.

If you have the handbook check the requirement there.

I think the name may have changed recently and it is critical to use the right one for your particular gearbox.

I have been reading loads of stuff about misaligned gear selector cables on the 207 and I saw several posts about a small part needed to fix it. There was no more information. I'm pretty sure the gearbox is ok I will change the oil. I had an Octavia that needed the gear cables aligned made a world of difference when it was done I can't find any information on setting the 207 cables, does anyone know the procedure?

The oil to that spec is now Total Transmission 8 Gear Oil (75W/80) and importantly GL-4 (not GL-5), which allows the synchromesh to work as it should.

Sorry, not had to deal with a 207, yet, but the 206 could behave like that and had no cables to stretch, or break.
As stated by others, the correct oil is critical, as is the correct oil level.
Not having felt it myself, but going by your description, that would be my first suspicion.
If the cables were at fault, selection would be obstructive at all speeds, not just above 30.
Speed related obstructiveness is always due to synchros not doing what they should

I went to Peugeot main dealer this morning he sold me 2 litres of Eurorepar 75/80 oil. It says on the bottle it's for PSA gearboxes. Anyway drained the oil, less than 1 litre.... New oil in I'll give it a day or two and see how it goes, can't be any worse than not enough oil!

I covered 60 miles on the new oil it's still a little notchy going down the gears especially until it's warmed up. I been reading online about a fix for this problem tho what the fix is I have no idea. When I changed the oil I put in 1.9l as I read 1.9L and 2L on different sites. Is 1.9 correct the VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. There's no whine from the box and it goes up the gears normally. I can live with it but if I could get it spot on it would be better. I assume that 206 and 307 etc boxes are different? Thanks
