306 rear lights don't work

The rear lights on my peugeot 306 (1996) have stopped working, when i turn on the side lights the dash board is illuminated but no lights work. when i turn on the ignition the front side lights come on but not the rear, all other lights in the rear clusters work.I have checked all bulbs and cleaned all the contacts.
Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this, i would be grateful of any information/ideas that you have.

Have you checked the fuses? Either the diagram on the fuse box lid or your owners manual will tell you what ones to check.
