Power Stweering Issue?

Post by vortexco »

Got myself the Diagbox and the adaptor for my Peugeot.

Ran a full scan and a couple of faults have shown up.

The car starts, and runs fine. Although now and again, when not moving very fast (1st gear speed) the power steering might feel or a second or two, as if its not assisting enough.

I have attached a screen shot of the report file.

So, my question is... Is this anything I need to be concerned with? If so where would I start to try and fix this?

Thank you in advance.

Well from the reports, it would seem that the power steering pump is overheating. That may be causing your intermittent fault.

You can let the unit cool for half an hour or so and run the diagnostic again, without the engine running.

The second part indicates the steering wheel angle sensor is not sending any information. Are you getting and ESP or ABS fault? It may be that you have the car running when undertaking the test, and that it is not actually sending any data as the wheel isn’t turning.

Try running the diagnostic in again with he engine off.

Also the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System has been intentionally disabled.

Thanks for replying,

No the engine was off during the test. I just had the key in and turned as I thought you had to, to make the ODB port active.

And yes I saw the Tyre pressure sensor was off, but it seems you have to turn it on in two places. Cant find the other place, was going to ask about that in another thread,

Check the actual TPMS valves are on the vehicle and have not been replaced with standard types, hence the disabling. If the system is reactivated, then the TPMS sensors may need to be re-paired with the car. This is done by enabling the system with Diagbox, but also needs an Exciter tool that is used in conjunction with Diagbox to pair them.

I think I'll leave the tyre sensor off. The valves look like normal ones to me. And I Havnt got the exciter tool.

Back to the power steering, the engine was not running, I just thought you had to still have the ignition on.

Is this correct? If so what should I be looking for to try and diagnose my steering?

Thank you.

The Power steering function provides assistance based on:
  • The speed of rotation of the steering wheel
  • The vehicle speed
  • The temperature of the steering fluid
However there can be several causes for these faults - low battery, communications problem on the CAN network, or in the case of fault U1105 the flywheel angle sensor.

If there are anomalies in the data received then the speed of rotation of the steering wheel is progressively fixed at a refuge value. Under normal operation, the power assistance is not provided at a constant output - it varies according to to the bulleted points I mentioned above.

The fault should disappear once the ignition is switched off and then on again - as long as the fault is no longer detected. You can clear the faults, then leavit ofr a while, then take it for a spin and see if they have returned.

Thanks for this, Since this I looked at the level of power steering fluid and topped it up, Not seeing a reduction in assistance now but i'll keep an eye on it.
