2002 dw8 partner starts then dies

Post by chinkostu »

Evening guys.

Friends dad has a dw8 engined partner which suddenly died when he was driving and then didn't go again. Towed it to a garage who lovingly cut the armouring and replaced the stop solenoid.

Issue is now the van starts but gently lowers the revs until it cuts out again. Restarts fine but will just die each time, even if you pin the lever on the pump.

Initially thought it was stuck EGR so whipped it off and it acts the same, certainly pulling enough air through the inlet when starting. Unplugging the needle lift causes it to run like a bag of spanners so thats operational, likewise with the crank sensor. We have changed the fuel filter and the horrible racheting lid and primed it, initially we had a few air bubbles but after resealing the pipe from the filter head to the pump they vanished.

The gent who did the solenoid has done a few before so unlikely to be his wiring, especially given it starts as well. So unless its the pump (lucas) having completely detonated internally i'm at a loss to what it could be.

Try running it from a can of diesel piped direct to the filter intake to eliminate any problems in the normal pipeline, some pipes have been known to get sucked flat and close off the flow.

Suspect air ingress - its usually the pipework rear of the engine perished so the fuel runs back at night.

It wouldn't start at all i'd imagine if it was leaking back. It did the same thing after being sat as it did after we finished for the day so fuel can't be leaking back.

We did initially have air in the line into the pump but a reseal seems to have soted that

Saying which, is it likely a massive airlock will cause this and ill need to crack the injectors to bleed it? Not shooting you down btw just theres still fuel at the lines regardless of time left.

Will try a jerrycan and feed it into the filter instead of the lines from the tank
