Does 1997 Expert TD have an EGR valve?

Post by Wookey »

When I put a TD engine in my 1997 NA expert I used a 1994 Xantia engine. That had a place for an EGR valve, but I had no holes in my exhaust system to connect it to (I used the exhaust from an 806 which I guess didn't have oneeither), so was advised by you lot to just remove the valve and seal off the mount hole. Fine - it's worked like that for 15 years.

However I note the new MOT rules about removed PDFs and EGRs and now things should be 'as supplied/designed' so thought I'd better check what to expect here. Did the 1997 TD have an EGR?

In the case of a changed engine like this what rules apply? Do I just say 'well there wasn't one when it was originally sold'? It's actually very hard to get to the spot where it should be mounted soI guess the chance of the MOT man noticing that it's been plated off is small.

If the TD Expert did have an EGR then maybe I should put it back, and get the right exhaust to connect it to? Now that everyone cares rather more about emissions. (I don't _want_ to drive a gratuitously smoky diesel about).

I am slightly amazed every year (for about the last 10) that it passed the emissions smoke test as it is very smoky when it starts up (embarassingly so), but it seems to calm down after a minute or so and start running properly, and I guess that's fine for the not-very-stringent rules that apply to 1997 mechanical IP engines. Am I right in understanding that the test stringency hasn't changed for older engines like this, only newer ones which have emissions level stated on the VIN?

I would be more concerned about the rest of the test as your car is pre 2006, for which the biggest changes in the smoke tests will be. DPFs aside, as I doubt yours will have one that early, it just needs to pass the smoke test for the the manufacturers stated limit for your vehicle that they have based on the engine you have in it now.

Surely if you do a engine transplant then all bets are off?

Is the MOT man going to fail my X7 if he cant find a DPF because I've put a rover V8 up front?

I'm not sure but I think Ken was saying his Synergie has an EGR. But definitely no DPFs on either of those.

And I think if you transplant an engine, it has to be tested on the basis of the manufacturer's certification for the replacement engine. So to follow that line and go to the extremes - let's say you put a DW10BTED4 into the Expert TD or Synergie, then it wouldn't pass the smoke or emissions test as the Synergie or Expert TD doesn't have all the emissions equipment or the engine management to go with it.

Is that true though? let's say I want to put a DW10BTED4 in the body of a classic jag, would that only be allowed if I also find room for a DPF?

Conversely if I lop of my current DPF and swap my engine with a non DPF'd DW10B could I get away with that? (as long as I register the engine swap correctly)?

I'd have to check to be certain, but from my last research efforts a while ago I'm sure that whatever the engine is that transferred over has to be documented and then the test is against that engine as opposed to the original.

There's nothing stopping you from doing that transfer to the Jag and nothing to say you need the DPF to go with it - but it still would fail emissions because of the lack of one. So makes sense that most people do a like for like swap or as near to so that everything fits I guess.

And on the last bit - again as long as it passes the smoke tests for that specific engine - so whatever depollution kit other than a DPF is needed would probably have to be in place for it to do so - theoretically. :-D

If that's true then I'm oficially on the look out for a non DPF'd DW10BTED4.... as long as I grind off the engine number I can claim to have swapped it over surely

Well I had zero trouble with this from the MOT people. Nasty old EGR-less engine passed smoke tests same as ever. It's a pity the paper they give you just has 'pass/fail' on it, rather than a number so you can't see how it changes over time

You could just ask the tester for a print out from the smoke tester which will have the actual reading on it.
